Good ways to make early money without mining?
I know that mining is probably the best/safest way for a totally fresh character to make cash, but I personally find it a little exploity because there's virtually 0 risk involved and the money is pretty great considering how little you have to do.

I have one character right now who makes some money by looting bodies in the desert and selling stuff, and while every now and then I get to sell some pricey Sand Ninja gear, most of the timer all I get are sticks and rags from bandits.

What other ways are there for early game characters to get some cash? Preferably ones that a solo character can easily accomplish.

there is risk based on the settings you use, when mining also where you start would make it high or low risk

True, but if you're mining to make money 9 times out of 10 you're going to be right near a town with guards who can rescue you when you get into the slightest bit of trouble.

Other than my first game start I have never mined for cats. I prefer to loot/scavenge until I can afford a farm. Pelts/ etc from downed animals and any gear from downed humanoids.

When I have the means I will build three Wheat fields, 1 well, and a Grog Machine. (Change to preference)

This is stable income and the raids allow my character(s) to gain experience while accumulating cats.

In fact I play with "house rules" that I can never sell any raw resource. It must be a finished product I crafted..

I am in a game now where it is day 220 and the only thing I have crafted is Grog. I purchase all armor/weapons/food from cities.

Easiest and safest i know of is pulling enemies and animal herds into town guards and then picking up whats left.
It does feel more exploity to me than mining but tastes differ.

Run to Mongrel and farm Fog prince heads. Or find beak thing nests and attempt to steal eggs.

Or the super cheese option that's even worse than mining: steal everything not nailed down and sell it in the next town ;p

Just sell it where you steal it. Using a crossbow locker. : )

Beak thing nest eggs if you can find an empty one and thievery are very easy as Radiosity said.

You could also try running around Vain and Purple Sands looking for ancient workshops to loot which can spawn some high value items. :steamhappy:

Burglary can be quite profitable, though you have to refrain from save-scumming unless you just want free money.

Set up a clothing/armor bench and sell the stuff make.

Hunt, and sell the skins and meat.

Sell people to UC slave shops.

The aforementioned beak thing eggs are worth a ton if you can snag them without getting eaten.

Yeah, removing the stolen flag using specific storage containers also works.

I level stealth and steal Beak Thing eggs. Very risky, very profitable :)

Also, most of treasure sites can be looted with good stealth, with very little risk.

Yeah, removing the stolen flag using specific storage containers also works.

Wait you can actually do that? What containers do you use to remove the flag?

As I said, the specific containers for items. Fabric Chest for fabrics, Food Store for food items, Armour Storage for armours, etc.

Only major thing missing is skelly limb storage, but there's a mod for that.

Skinning at HN is better, there're less bandits and you can train stats by running around. If UC I train assassination on prisoner, slave or downed enemy and sell all wallet heroes. or unbrand stolen tradable with buy back at shinobi merchant.

I found some abandoned houses that can respawn free goods include food and no stolen tag, even comes with free bed. I only hire few people until day 20 later and concentrate resource to my first guy so not caring much money until mid game.

Clearing "stolen" tag sounds like exploit to me. :)
