Normally I kept them in a cage, spar with them, heal them and after a few fights just recruit them, some get really buffed up stats - sometimes put a med kit so they improve healing too...but still had reloaded and they were completely gone...left the cell (the Hub) to explore the swamps and Mongrel aaand the animal and 2 prisoners despawned..unless the slavers took them hmmmm
If you want to keep someone imprisoned without a cage, you'd need to physically prevent them from escaping, like putting interior walls around them with no gap to walk through. this won't prevent them from despawning when you leave the area though. you DO need a cage for that.
