Other options are:
-find a battle and loot the corpses (risky as traveling is very dangerous)
-lure mobs to follow you and take them to town guards (also risky)
-go south to Squin and recruit Ruka. She is free and not malnourished. It will give you more time to learn the ropes if your initial character dies of hunger.
And traveling around for bit still found nothing except a couple unusable nodes.
EDIT - I used the default start
Cant find starving ones when cant find any though. Wilderness is literately empty. No plants to collect, or loot boxes, no items literately nothing other then couple stone and copper nodes.
It is a game unlike any other, so abandon expectations based on your past experience of other games. First thing for new char? Learn when to run away, seriously.
Just did not expect that at all. Expected to harvest plants and such atleast.
Alternatively, you can go southwest from the hub and end up in the city of Squin. It's another populated area with shops and guards and the like, which will give you very different interactions. i haven't spent a lot of time there myself, so i don't know what to expect there really.
Regardless of what happens, so long as you don't die, the game will continue, and you'll usually be able to work out a solution to any problem either through trial and error, being patient and waiting, or sheer brute force.
in whatever situation, don't be afraid to loose fights, that's usually the first step to getting better at them.
