Kenshi
Your favorite zone for a base
What's your favorite base location and why? Do you prefer peace and quiet or dangerous but excellent resources? Or maybe you like just conflict and live in a zone with little benefit other than a constant stream of enemies to fight!

Peace and Quiet with excellent resources, hence why Shem is the best base location. Ngl it is quite boring but it still my favorite base location because it's located almost at the center of the map. I would love to settle somewhere else but i always settle on Shem for whatever reasons.

I mean, if you want to go somewhere exciting, you can always just travel. There's not much sense having your base somewhere dangerous in my opinion.

You don't like crab tournament? You don't want to face unique encounters with npcs that only spawn for base assults? A home to stash your millions of skeleton grade nodachis?

Border zone.

It can support quite a few different crop types, a decent number of locations can have both iron/copper nearby, it is decently close to many different nations to buy/sell at a profit, and the fact it is mostly cliffs means that many spots only need a few walls to cut it off from the outside world.

As for raids: The shek and holy nation are fairly easy to please, dust bandits and starving bandits are a bit annoying, but black dragon ninjas give loads of low quality katanas to sell.

Beyond all of that it is somewhat in the middle of the map, good for adventuring to any corner of the map without having to run much more than 50% of it.

The best bonus: Nothing eats you once it beats you up in the Border zone :)

Edit: Ok, it isn't as close to the middle of the map as I thought, slightly to the left :(

I seem quite different. I am more prone to just buy a few buildings in a city to get things like research done, and favor mods that allow for a more carefree nomadic life style.

In my current playthrough using the buy any building mod I took over the Ghost Village, and have access to wheat crops, a well, power generation from the windmills. And I dont register as an outpost so for example I took the Phoenix captive and held him there in a cage and never was hunted down by his faction. And I have cannibals in easy range to go fight to train up guys.

For me its more about the role play, my character wanted to be more like a secret base type thing. So saying " I live in the mysterious Ghost Village beyond the Hidden Forest in the hills over looking the sea" has exactly the right energy I was looking for.

But it was not a quick journey. He as the mere 1 armed Bandit of Sho Bottai spent months building up his wealth and gang in the city, hiding in his safehouse by day, robbing the city in the night under the cover of sand storms.

Then after building up a large gang of Sand Ninja and Samurai using the capture and recruit mods, I took them on a journey along the western coast line to see what we might find. At first we thought about setting up an expanded fishing village near Dead Cat, but once we found the Ghost Village we knew it was home.

That intersection between hidden forest, Wend and the Floodlands is excellent and has a green environment if you settle on the hidden forest side. You can run into cannibals there and HN will also come knocking.

Border zone is great for the reasons others have listed.

Greenbeach (the southern part below the canyon line) is great if you can survive long enough to set up your walls. You can also very easily ally yourself with crab raiders. 100% green with 50% arid means you'll be able to grow everything but riceweed.

Shem is good but slightly more dangerous than border zone because it is in the Swamp's zone of influence, so you'll get all sorts of bandit gangs there.

Fishman island is totally OP if you can kill the Gurgler King. Crab population is manageable with a walled settlement.

Lastly, Sinkuun is probably my favourite place. Plenty of fertile land atop highly defensive plateaus, and comparatively peaceful. Better than the border zone!

I have never tried to build there honestly and the Bastion does look fairly cool, do the cannibals move out once you take down all the leaders?

Recently made a base in Gut, right next to the slaver base. My combat character was strong enough to go AFK in the middle of a pack of Beak Things on 3x slots, so it wasn't a dangerous area for me. Also had maxed out turrets and slapped skeletons on them. Infinite food and leather. If I stopped killing beak things for a bit, they'd surround the base and make it impossible for raids to make it to me. And since I was right next to the United Cities slaver faction and paid them off, I was able to make them aggressive towards my enemies, while also getting recruits over time by buying slaves from them.

I'm in The Pit's East, with constant raids from Crab raiders, Reavers, fishmen, skin bandits, and scavengers. It also gives me a bridgehead into the Ashlands for all the iron and copper alloy plates I need. The only problem is that most Holy raids except the one for phoenix can spawn at my range, but they don't pose a real threat at my current game level.

I guess i havn't figured out the base concept yet lol. I just run around killing. Im having a blast but i bet the base building would 1 up my fun. I have almost explored the entire map and there are definitely tougher areas, i'd say anywhere where creatures are is going to be difficult. Anyone know a good way to get people to favor you? I help them in combat and heal there wounds but they seem to not like that as much as i would?!

I know there are the few "really good" base locations....eastern plateau, Okran's Valley (I love setting up right by Blister Hill), and Fog Islands (unbelievably good resources, but boring)....but I've been doing a few that are a bit different, and I usually come back to these 2 locations:

One is in the Hidden Forest, very near, but about 2 hills to the east of the Flotsam Ninja town, near the foot of the path up to World's End. Ally with them and it's a safe place to run to if you get overwhelmed, and their reinforcements are always timely. You get cannibals and HN raids, and the cannibal hunters will patrol nearby too.

The other is a ways to the east of Clownsteady. You're south of the ridiculous vision-reducing mist, have full swamp 100% fertility. plenty of water. Iron mined from the big wreckage. Only copper needs a bit of searching for a good site. You can QUICKLY run hash into clownsteady to trade with the Shinobi, there are loads of swamp turtle spawns for easy combat training and endless meat. The Red Sabres and the Swamp ninjas are both close enough to train with regularly on their patrols, and their weapons sell pretty well. Clownsteady is also the safest UC town around to go unconscious in or near, as they have a police station, but no slavers (and if you do want slaves for recruiting or selling, take a short hike to the nearby southern slave markets). Access to the rest of the continent is pretty easy too....its a long run, but skirting the swamp to either side runs you through the not-too-terrible spider plains (good visibility, easy to avoid enemies), or shem...and then you're right back into the center of the map.

There will be far fewer patrols, but IMO there aren't many in Sinkuun anyway.

There are mods that do things like get your rep with a faction for healing them. In Vanilla things like bringing the Phoenix to the Sheks, UC, or Flotsam Ninja HQ will score you big rep with them. Hell the Shek Queen will even give you a very special gift in return.

I really like to set up in shem. early on it's a little dangerous because of the break things but as soon as you have your walls and harpoons, you can make a good living there. the lakes also allow you some nasty defense strategies, by building 1 gate into the lake and keep it open. the enemies (especially bandits etc) will try to use the open gate and therefore give you alot of time to shoot them with harpoons while they are swimming.
besides that, it's kinda in the center of the map and with flats lagoon you got an interesting place for selling stuff and getting thieves backpacks for your people.
