goto the fog islands they said
and build a settlement there.
holy crap. watched a squad of holy order ex slaves get beaten by a mob and carted off, strung up to poles and eaten alive. while an insane amount of text scrolled through ranging from chomping text to screams of pain. was enough to give me shivers as my squad stealthed by to reach safety of mongrel. think ill just hunt some recruits here and hightail it out with a merc body guard. i dont think i wanna build here now

you gotta build up outta the fog. the screams don't carry that far....
flu007 Feb 18, 2019 @ 1:28pm
That's what I did.

I didn't go there to build, though, was just trying to visit Mongrel for some sightseeing. There are a few unique recruits there, I forgot offhand who, but there were a few I picked up. Then hired mercs to help us get back to civilization. I think the Mercs didn't make it out of the town's visual range. One on one those fogmen aren't too bad, even the heavies, but they keep on coming, and attrition is a (bad word).

I got my group out of there, but it took some laborious running and shooting from my crossbow guy, and eventually we just hightailed the last part and lured the last handful of them all the way to Stack. (I think we had a train of 18 of them after us at some point, which we whittled down along the way.)

't Was fun though. :)

in the mountains above. theres like 4 or 5 good peaks to set a base at. i was just joking about the screams, but the mountains are actually a deterrent from fogmen. they stay in the lower sections for the most part.

On the hills in the fog. They stick up above the fog.
mdcpaladin Feb 18, 2019 @ 1:48pm
lol i didnt know that. then again i traversed the fog at night watching like a hawk cuz those patrols r huge. weak but they had numbers. and the heavies gave us a beating but we took them down. it was still brutal. tho im walking out with 5 new recruits and lots of books/building supplies. idk if i wanna build and never be attacked tho.
either way i gota get these newbs out of here and start training their abilities and make some money from loot. i dont feel rdy to build a settlement yet

the only real reason you should build a settlement is for constant flow of food. which you don't have to worry about until you have an actual army. don't fall into the same issue many new players do, just because you can make a base doesn't mean you should.

well i have 19 now in my band and i 6 meant to be labor but i think i m gonna take them to train to fight. only issue i see is managing food for all of them without having to break my bank. and hanging around mongrel training is working decent. i have the shinobi at my back and hordes of low lvl fogmen to fight without to much worry of my squad being carted off as food

Bull herds, Wyatt. and several other readers. Bulls are a great thing for several things , like beakies depending on ones own tastes . or been tasted.

they train your squad in wholesome , they feed you plenty , they give reasonable hides and some money for horns . i even like them now, with toughness and all stats about 60.
sometimes, i do a almost naked bull wrestling on a wild bull, 1 vs 1 with changing squad mates.
after about an hour , my group is ready for decent bedtime.
and that bull? you gotta see what he does to a HN patrol trying to get it down

So, the best place on the Foggy Islands here.

It has everything for a great life - iron, copper, stone, water. I use hydroponics for everything except wheat and cactus. And also a great place to train the team.

they also steal training for newer units, as they maul in a direct line sometimes effecting 10 or more enemies and giving no gain to the remainder of the party. sure if you wanna cheese bull herds are the way to go, but at that point you could just crossbow everybody for a lot cheaper. while the catch up to damage per unit would be steep at first, you'd overall be better off have everybody crossbow kite.

things you need to consider about building in the fog islands: yes the fogmen, fogheavy, and fogprince are pretty weak and the prince heads are worth 6k each. but have you seen a raid called "The Fog". do not build there if you are unable to fight off a swarm of them, they come no matter where you are, i had a city between the hub and the east most hive town nearby and still got fog raids. another thing is this, food does not grow well there. i have hydroponics so some things are not too bad but to keep food cubes pumping out of my 3 stoves and bread out of my 5 ovens, it takes A LOT (i have 150 people in my outpost at the moment). Mongrel is ok to use as a sort of base of operations but it will not support a large group and unless you download the mod for moisture collectors, you will be running the shops every day hoping rng provides enough water to keep the food you are growing in your building.
I built in the fog islands because i thought i would be able to put a huge dent in the population of the fogmen, however ive went back and forth between 2 death yards and the fogmen there respawn really fast, there is no way i can see to cut back on the population like there is with cannibals, holy nation, UC or other factions. the fog are basically western hive who have been zombiefied or something.

i escaped the fog islands after a few reloads. watched my entire squad be carted off after constant running battles

jesus 150 pop? i have 21 ppl in my group and planned to start a settlement. trying to hunt down animals to kill, cleaning out the shop of food is becoming a task on top of equipping everyone as i tend to steal the equipment i want. maybe im just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ player. i do hate reloading but i tend to only do it on a massive wipe. if i can pick up my guys and still make a retreat to safety then i keep going. even hobbling and crawling or at worst hiding out of sight to heal enough to move again
BellieusMaximus Feb 19, 2019 @ 9:03am
you are not a bad player. i restarted the game 5 times due to learning how, when, and where to start a settlement. i stated at the hub with one person. went to squin with 4, built up to 40 while i was in squin, i had a working settlement inside squin and all of my people could fight off large bandit groups. i moved to the area between the hub and the hive because there is a good spot there on the border and i could take advantage of using 2 terrain types for food. as time went on i moved into the holy nation territory, the fog islands, near the cannibal capitol, and finally dead center of the desert between the 4 major UC cities. i planned on continuuing on to the southern hive and skinwalkers, eventually ending up in the ashlands. as i moved my population grew, at one point i had 5 outpost running all at once. that grew to be a problem because of some pathing and gate issues i have so i consolidated. now my fighting force is coming up on 55 people, i have 3 people dedicated to bio fuel, 17 farmers and 5 cooks, i also have a group dedicated to weapon production and armor production. i have a group dedicated to running to my many water tanks and storage areas, that is all they do. i use 3 people to constantly make long arrows because my fighting force has close to 30 guys with the masterwork eagle cross. this all has taken close to 1200 game days, also recently i imported and only brought people and tech so i started again in the fog islands, the map i showed you. my turret team is sitting strong at 25 right now, if i can find more skeletons ill make it 33. it takes a lot and sounds like its a lot of managing but its really easy, the biggest pain in the rear i have is making sure they all have a stock of med kits and bolts, that takes quite a bit of micro management. i recruited everyone i could at first, the war with the united cities got me close to a dozen free recruits (that is only those i kept). now i am thinking about maxing out at 256, i think thats the mods max pop, but i cant think of anyhting to do other than make 100 more support, cooks and turret. once my fighting force gets to 55 i will not add more, it already takes close to an hour of my time to prep for an assault on an area. so if i follow my plan ill end up with a kill zone of 75 ish turrets and a squad so big no city can stop me.

restarting with 30 hours in doesnt sit well with me and my small group of 21 feels to be a challenge to feed without a settlement to start farming. i suppose i can try and track down animals for food as i kind of wanna start in a crater outside of the hub tho it has low water at 30 from prospecting but fertile ground and lots of nodes, but 3 major cities nearby i could buy water from. been hesitant to start it knowing i could put many hours into it to find it not work but thats the beauty of it i suppose
