If you want attrition on any incoming raiders, set up shop in the Fog Islands or Cannibal Plains. That one can be challenging.
I just started and I'm still quite weak, I set up shop in a Squin longhouse.
I started copper harvesting so I have decent money and did a bit of training (but I still have to rely on speed most of the times).
Now I would like to to setup my first settlement with mining farming.
I would like to be as quiet as possible while I start production.
Is there such a place in Kenshi?
I found reference to Fisher Island but when I arrived there with my party I was assaulted by a zillion "crab-like humanoids" and captured.
Can someone advise?
Go to the hive village that I mentioned, and alternate walking NW and using prospecting. It's very close, you can put your base wall to the village (once you clear the minimum limit). I think Tobel Plays was the video I saw it on.
Check out youtube videos by Grand Strategem, Nerdgoria, Tobel Plays, Orange01, FrankWuzHere, Terminarch, Francis John, and Almar Winfield. Most of them mention "good" base locations in at least one of their videos.
To be honest, there are no perfect locations. There's no magic spot with all 3 farming biomes together on one screen. Some places are barren and require advanced farming tech to grow food there. Some places have no wind, or stone, or water, or ores. You have to decide what food you want to grow, what power you want to use.
Are there resources you can wall off to protect, etc?
The area is swarming with beak things, so don't go there over encumbered.
Lots of blue water as well, so if you use mods, this is a great place to fish.
To enjoy the game to its fullest, I'd recommend playing in a biome you like and deal with its downsides as opposed to looking for a perfect spot.
You need to block all entrances but one with wall part, I keep west open for access to Mongrel and put the south wall in the bottom of the wally for wells as plateau is dry.
Much more space than you ever need, only cannibal raids and most of them fails to reach you. Fogmen rarely bother me except then you pull an tail of them into the base.
But you will pass lots of fogmen so you need to move at 22 mph or more or be prepared to fight trough them. Robotic limbs or just be strong and fast.
Probably one of the best place I've encountered (Not that I've looked hard). 2 iron node(100%), 6 copper node(80%, 3 very close to iron), 100% stone, 100% fertility, 60% water, decent wind. In my latest playthrough I've only had some dust bandit raid and roaming starving bandits. (Still keeping a squad of tech hunter mercs on site at all time just in case...).
There might be a better spot nearby that would allow to have both arid and swamp environment, but that site works well enough at least for a starter base.
If you want a lot of combat training, go to shem, swamps or norther coast.
If you want no combat, buy a large building in the hub or any town of your liking that at least has a single mine. (You need to trade, to get all you need.)
I built at so many places bases to tell you that most spots are great, if you know how to make use of the possibilities at hand.
