to answer your question, combat skills are time based. Meaning amount of time in combat earns you xp. succesful attacks will increase your attack as well lol
Getting a beat down is the best way to train. It will at least get your defense and toughness skills up. My poor Sheng may be able to run 23 miles per hour with a backpack full of bread (which is Kenshi gold based on size:weight ratio), but he cannot fight to save his life.
Just make sure you have some spare equipment locked up in case you lose and those bandits take your stuff (or disable bandits looting players).
Build a farm and a building with a bed for everyone. Then when the herbivores come to eat your plants attack them.
Having the beds nearby makes recovering a lot quicker. Especially since anyone unconcious placed in a bed in a town get dumped to the street now.
P.S. Minus any lost limbs from animals nibbling on you after a fight or fog men/canabals getting hungry.
Disclaimer: Not responsible for lost limbs due to using this advice.
Ya I plan on making beds when I can but I'm limited on supplies right now. All I have is 2 camp rolls on the ground but I don't think they do much since they still heal at a snails pace when using them lol.
