Don't bother with the dog, it moves too slow. Unless you plan on getting a whole pack of them, anyway. Then you just have to keep them fed, and hope no one butchers them when they are KO'd. Otherwise if you come across a situation when you get outmatched, you'll escape just fine with the right application of Athletics, but your dog is going to get destroyed every time.
Better animals than a dog exists. Bulls, goats and crabs are pretty good.
It's not very fun or viable to own your own base while playing solo though, probably better to operate out of a medium to large sized house bought in a town instead.
Solo play is fun, but if you get into a sticky situation such as being majorly wounded / crippled / dismembered and put into prison, escaping can be an extreme pain, possibly even an impossible one. Support is always nice to have.
I'd always recommend for a solo run especially your first one to simply pick a start with additional characters, make some Skeletons and then stick them in a bar somewhere. That way if your initial solo character gets messed up, you might still have a chance to save them with your Skeletons / additional crew.
I got hunted by one of those (their crossbow hits for 145+ dmg). Since that day i allied with the holy nation and vowed to destroy that degenerate filth
At least, not when you're 180 meters away wearing nothing but fine silks and my high level Eagles Cross sniper gets a bead on you anyway.
I hate those guys and their stupid anime haircuts and their stupid shades.
1 - The Ranger of Eblin, a solo start with a slightly experienced character who is the last of a dying race of men (Think aragon from lord of the rings) and has a 25+ regeneration time for healing. This way you arent stuck spending minutes waiting on fast forward to heal.
2 - Bonedog backpack: a simple backpack for a bonedog (you can mod one in like i do so you get a pup or you can buy one from a farm) keep extra food and medicines and simply put the dog on Bodyguard, you wont have to worry about i again.
One other thing to consider, I got around the issue of needing to be carried or to stop being over whelmded by bandits by having One other member. I usually hunt for a character called "Bard" because he will break out into song as you travel or rest which adds to the immersion, i aslo make him tiny and with a big beard, my own personal dwarven bard armed with a crossbow and a quiver of sharp qoutes! ....lol
