how do you actually defend your bases?
pretty much new to kenshi but so far ive managed to make an outpost but ive been assaulted too many times by the bandits and the gate doesnt seen to stop them for too long.
ive tried building the gate in U shape with crossbows on the side, tried the double gate(was a pain in a♥♥♥♥♥to build).

this base had many changes and what you'll see is a downgrade cuz i was done with everything and settle in the hub.

fyi:this base is right next the hub.

Your guys probably sucks ass so you need to hire mercs to help defend.

I have been using the holy nation for now to defend my base while my farmers work and make me cash and my main character/warriors explore and fight. I do have crossbows set up around my gates but only need them for raptors and few raids. Though i have to find a better place to go soon now that they have seen me with a race they hate. They are starting to annoy me with prayer day...

I have most of my guys on a roof of a building with crossbows and harpoons, I have 2 engineers at the door to slow them down with repair. mercs helps too

I never use walls,no gate,no mercenaries, and no turrets. I just trained my tribe, got good gear, and have different weapons, and roles for each member.

I have one strong tank that is in full plate wielding a falling sun,one medic assister using an axe in medium armour, one crossbow, and the rest all light armour either using a saber or katana and I do great.

Now if I am fighting the HN or other factions in plate armour I will switch to the hackers,and I do great. Try to train your characters in two different weapons skills,and I recommend the hackers and your main weapons because hackers are important for killing alot of mobs. {especially skeletons}

If you build your base in cannibal land, its actually easier to defend in many ways. I was getting slaughtered by numerous different squads at my first outpost. They just kept hitting me faster than I could recover. I moved to cannibal land and other than accidentally losing a member of my team to their dinner (wasn't paying close attention), it's been much easier. I hit them with turrets and fight them when they get in, but they're weak and I can recover easily before they send out another raid. Someone else deserves credit for this idea, but unfortunately I can't remember who suggested it.

Why go to such extremes, and waste time running to the cannibals, and risking dying,or wasting time trying to babysit a massive defiant faction that doesn't get the message to leave your base ?

So just concentrate on training, and have patience, and eventually you will be beating any faction of that area you live in.

Why waste your time hauling materials all the way up north to only be tormented daily and risk getting eaten for dinner when you can be doing something else productive such as training ?

level 60s and harpoons

if you have geared squad you can defend from rooftops and not use walls.. if there something raiding you hard a lot u can put your base in the path of where its traveling from so they divert into a city and fight it instead

This is my base i made this incredible water maze, the funny thing is when they are about to get trough just open the gate go to the other side and close it. Now some will go back to the maze out to you. Its this weird AI mechanic thinking passing trough a unblock path is faster than destroying the gate.

Build your base in Gut then max out the numbers of animal nests in import setting so you can have beak things to assist you with your base defense.

Hi. I also do not rely on harpoons/gates/walls. Before establishing an Outpost will be a Roamer. Building my faction combat skills. Perhaps will also try to increase their turrets skills if I want. My main concentration is combat skills melee or MA. Roaming will also help to determine what enemies will invade an Outpost. Usually by the time I built an Outpost all my faction members are able to fight. Good luck.

If you put your guys on the wall and remove ramps, they can fire the harpoons without worrying about being killed/

Oh that's weird, I have my outpost is pretty much the exact same spot as you
mr_bman Mar 20, 2019 @ 12:25pm
I defend my base by not having one. I buy buildings in towns which don't get the special event raids. Use a few mods to let me get water and grind flour in towns.

The most cost efficient way to defend your outpost is to have guys who can defend themselves against the locals around your outpost. If you can beat them then you are pretty much safe. You could also "abandon" your outpost until your group is strong enough to hold it.

Someone mentioned hiring mercenaries and I will just double down on that as well as propping turrets along your walls. Wall placement is important to maximize the damage that your turrets do while your mercenaries hold the enemy in place.

A 'U' shaped gate usually works.

i strongly suggest venturing out and finding engineering and ancient tech books. nothing will raid your base when you are gone and the gate is closed or open. also, you could goto squim or hub and buy a building to research in and do your tedious stat building.

My advice....get a pack animal 5-10 people and go out and venture the world. you will pick up all kindas of loot and build your chars up at the same time. After you get some good loot, head back and research harpoons or turrets, put them on the wall and asign people to to use them. Place your remaining defenders in front of the gate with "hold" turned on, once they brech your gate, turn off hold and go for a full attack.

most times they just beat you up and leave. You MIGHT loose a limb or two but youll be okay. part of the game is to beat you up on a rountinly basis
