Well, if you need/want the space for Crafting, etc, then sure it's worth buying buildings in Towns. The Hub has more buildings available than most and there are plenty of ore nodes around.
I've been using The Hub as a base, prior to building my own. My Armorer is at around 80 skill and is slowly outfitting everyone in Samurai armor, etc (whatever is needed). But, that's really about the only Crafting skill one can do without a lot of difficulty. (Leveling up skill with animal skins/leather) Weapon crafting is coming along, but it's a bit slower. Crossbow crafting is very difficult without a true base supplying all your material needs.
The materials expended and costs to buy up everything aren't an issue if you have enough characters mining/making cash. Buying Building Materials in The Bar, the Rebel Outpost, Squin and nearby Waystations is not a problem, either.
Yeah, I've stayed in The Hub far too long. Plenty of materials stored up, decent gear, good number of experienced characters, so I can't complain. :)
