What's the highlight of the burning forest?
I started my solo playthrough near Broken Teeth in Skinner's Roam. There are plenty of hungry bandits (I have spawn setting 25% more and spawn size 50% more, so that could have been why). After they became too easy I'd roam around Okran's Pride looking for River Rapters, then back to Skinner's Roam looking for bulls. And at least none of those eat you, although look out for Bone Dogs in SR if you get knocked out.
The only thing you really need to find is fabric for beds. The ruined holy mines have enough resources just laying around for a small shack and some storage. Oh yeah, and you'll want something to protect you against dust storms in SR, they are pretty much constant.
Peak insanity since no sane person would willingly go near it, well alone live there. Good area to protect yourself from enemies too.
All I can really tell you is what I did. I'm no expert, Kenshi is still new to me, so I'm sure optimization could be done. I started in Bad Teeth and just kept going into Skinner's Roam after the Hungry Bandits. Then back to Okran's Pride to look for River Raptors. And back to Skinner's Roam to kill bulls and look for Dust Bandit camps. After that I moved to Grey Desert waystation and looked for Cloud Ninjas, Blood Raiders, and Rebel Farmers. Then off to The Outlands to kill Reavers. Then off to Bast to kill UC Samurai patrols. And that's as far as that save has gotten so far.
I decided when I started this character that he would do no mining or crafting. He'd have to buy. steal, or loot anything he needed. He only researched long enough to build some furniture and storage, then dismantled the research bench. So an outpost was never needed, he'd just buy a house in the closest town to where he was hunting, or just sleep in the wild.
