there are also Meitou grade weapons that "Bosses" wields.
Armor smithing on the other hand is very worth, it will take you a lot of Armour King visits to equip your squad in full masterwork Samurai armor, and AK doesn't even sell Crab armor so if you want masterwork grade Crab you gotta smith it yourself.
They is mod that makes craftable the same as shop bought, still hard to get as it tech level 6

Meitou remains uncraftable which is fair as they are uniques and special boss loot.

Cheers for mod link
Ease of access matters, though. With armor, crossbow, and weapon crafters in 70 to 90 skill range, I can reliably equip my team of 20-25 people in exactly what I want them to have. I can also much more easily experiment with different load outs, as any item is at most 1 game day away.
EDIT: This is the mod

That being said, weapon could be crafted only up to Edge 2, and loot/buyble ones for Edge plain better because of +10% sharp damage. Up to catyn 3 they're just as good tho.
For me personally crafting was nice jumping point in equipming my squad, but your mileage may vary. I saw how people who knew a bit about game was being able to buy Mk weapons nearly at start and if you know how, Edge could be get relatively easy too.
Of course, most of my squad sqaunders money and has no time for fancy. I do have one or two that are fashion victims and have to have the latest shiny and need to look their best on the battlefield. Would be kinda good to have an intrasquad affinity mechanic, but I use my imagination :)
You can see expected results from the character sheet if you mouse over the skill. Be aware that being in the darkness will massively kill the skill and give you the poor expected result, so check when in full light.
For clothing/armor and crossbows, the crafted quality is directly related to the skill of the crafter. Everything starts off at prototype, and goes up from there. Steps between the grades (let's say between Standard and High) have a chance to crit to produce the next step. For example at skill 94, you get Specialist armor 100% of the time unless it crits with 29% chance, and then you get Masterwork armor. Masterwork armor is fantastic.
For weapons, the grades are locked behind skill, research, building upgrade, and material grades. Research Weapon Grade technologies, you start off with Rusted Junk that only uses iron plates; when upgrading to Catun grade, you will start using Iron Plates and Fabric. When upgrading to Mk I-III grades, you will use steel bars and fabric. I don't know what you use for Edge I, as I have not unlocked that yet, and I believe that is the highest crafting grade you can unlock without mods.
In other words, weapon crafting will cap out at skill level, then at technology level, then at crafting station level in that order. It also has a crit chance to upgrade to the next level.
