Mistakes You Made Your First Time in Kenshi
Going into any game for the first time blind/mostly blind will lead you to make mistakes. For Kenshi, those mistakes are often amplified in nature because this game is one that doesn't mess around. It's a harsh, brutal world that doesn't care if you're alive or dead and will punish you for the slightest misstep. With that said, what are some of the big time mistakes you guys made when you first got into Kenshi?

- Decked out my (mostly) fresh character in heavy armor and weapons despite not having ANYWHERE near the skills needed to properly use them. I still got my ass kicked by Hungry Bandits, though it took them a bit longer to do so.

- Picked a fight with goats with my fresh out of the box character. This was how I had my first character death and learned that the goats of Kenshi are something to be feared, not mocked.

- Went swimming in Arach. I learned fast why you do not go swimming in Arach.

- Went to a Holy Nation settlement with tech in my bags. Whoops.

- Tried to open a weapon shop in Squin, only to discover later on that the game, at least in Vanilla, doesn't recognize weapons as being items NPCs actually want to buy. Not really a punishing mistake but one of a, "Dammit, I spent a lot of time trying to do that!" mistake.

The first time I played this game, I mine the iron ore outside of Hub for a bit, and then bought some food with the money, looked up the map on the internet, and went out to explore the swarm region. The thing was, I could only run at 15mph. That playthrough ended very quick and ugly.

Yeah, I think my first death was probably trying to fight starving bandits. "Bandits?" I thought. "Bandits are early-game fodder." Little did I know that a fresh wanderer in Kenshi is even less than early-game fodder.

Wandering into Blister Hill with a skeleton was probably a close second.

Also, thinking 40 athletics would protect me from beak things. Yikes. Myth busted.

"You're so sneaky, dude. In and out - no one will even know you were there."

He was so sneaky that he was able to crawl away without the skeleton on the turret noticing that the missing leg was not as fatal as it had appeared.

- Trying to be a Martial Artist with only 1 member

- Thinking beefing up by fighting fogmen was a good idea only to get grabbed and stuck in an infinite loop (fogmen keeps going back and forth, forever)

- Playing without a start mod
- Thinking I could walk safely out of the gate of the HUB
- Giving a witty response to a holy nation preacher while in their land
- Walking into Beek things territory with a low level group

Fogmen are so weak, let's waste them all for fun, and rescue that qt slave girl, lol.
Cost us 2 arms and one leg.

^-- This. That was the first thing I thought about when I read your thread title. :)

One thing I found that requires gameplay experience is judging the relative strengths of one's own group/team when compared to a threat, especially when it comes down to degraded combat capability due to incurred damage/losses.

So, let's say a team is on the move and has just defeated a group of Dust Bandits. The team is wounded, but you're not too worried about it. You come upon a group of ____ and would normally not worry about them as a possible existential threat, either.

Wat do?

That question takes a bit of experience with the game in order to produce the right decision. :) How many fighters are already at reduced Strength due to wounds? Who's limbs are in danger? Is your best dps'er capable of using their primary weapon? Do you have the appropriate weapons for this enemy? etc...

I remember falling across this particular issue when I fought some Starving Bandit packs, one after the other. The first was easy, the second wasn't... It was either the second or third pack that finally downed my first character and ended up with him losing all his accumulated garbage-items. :)

I kept trying to carry raw meat from dead skimmers to my dying dog, but since I was starving kept eating it before I could get there...

"Yo this game has base building? I'll start right away!"
thecelt May 6, 2021 @ 2:09pm
First try hungry bandits swarm me lose a leg and die
Second try mobbed by bandits trying to build a house beat down, just by more bandits and die
Third try attack solo baby goat with an iron bar and die
Fourth try kite those bandits into the Hub bar loot sell go outside attack lone adult goat and die
Fifth try kite bandits, mine copper, kite bandits mine copper, hire helper, kite bandits and mine copper.
So 4 gruesome deaths in less than 40 minutes, but my fifth try worked :steamhappy:

Very large base and enough people to start taking cities.

-Went to the burning forest because forget why I hate it....
-Lets build a base, it should only take an hour, then I can do something else with my Saturday.

I forget my first mistakes in this game. But a few things I do remember that I keep doing on a lot of my play through is that I decide to build a base way too late in my games and I must learn how to farm. A lot of the time, I encumber my guys with way too much extra clothing as I get too attached to carrying a round complete outfits if you understand what I mean.

Which begs a question , is there mod where you can build mannequins (To have at your base.) to display all your different clothing outfits you've managed to collect?

Only mistake I really made that left an impression was when I attacked an elder beak thing for the first time, assuming it was just another beak thing. Damn thing dismembered or outright killed half my squad, and left the other half very badly mangled.

Getting attacked by bone dogs and assuming HN guards were going to help me out.
Noooo...

Walking into a nobles House in Sho Battai. Got thrown into prison and just a day later i won a free trip to the next stone camp. Managed to flee at night only to learn that you shouldnt fight Skimmers with bare hands.
