Kenshi
Police Chief not placing squad members in cage.
So I was freeing a small group of escaped slaves outside Stoat and once I started doing so, one of them started attempting to unlock his own shackles, was spotted by the UC guards, and got a 5,000 cat bounty. I freed him without being spotted, and he decided to follow me and join. I don't really care about him at the moment since he's fresh and I didn't need recruits, so I turned him in for the bounty in Stoat and figured I'd let him serve his time and train him after.

Well, the Police Chief just held on to him and didn't put him in a cell. The jail is only half full, so there are plenty of empty cages. I even went up and picked several cages, and paid bail for a couple to free up space. Nothing is triggering the Chief putting this guy in a cell. Any ideas?

I've had the same issue and thought it might be a mod. The way I solve it now is by placing the person in the cell and then paying the bounty. If not, like you said, the Chief will just hold them on their shoulder.

It doesn't happen if you give them a non squad member bounty. I give them outlaw farmers all the time and they will put them in a cell if there's space.

If you have a save from before you gave them to the chief I'd reload that. If not then I'd try a save and an import knowing that an import won't delete a squad member. Maybe it will reset the person the chief is carrying. If that doesn't work then I don't know.

you can import and choose the "reset squad positions" to pull everyone in your squad back to a default position near the border zone if all else fails. Maybe this guys fate is to forever be carried by his personal Police Captain bodyguard.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, it hasn't happened with any of the dozens of NPC bounties I've turned in, and I turned in 2 of my own squad members just the other day and he took them to the cages just fine.

I don't think it's a mod, if only because I'm only running a couple graphical things (Dark UI and Font Redux) that shouldn't alter any of that, and I had those already when it was working fine with squad members.

I suspect something janky happened when I was out exploring recently because when I came.back, the jail was full of a stupid amount of gear laying on the ground from when slavers strip inmates they take. There were also a few Tech Hunter and Drifter inmates, so something wacky happened at the city while I was away.

I'll try an import here later and see if that fixes it.

That's basically what's happening to him. The Police Chief goes out occasionally with the other guards "bounty hunting" nearby miscreants and takes this poor guy with him the entire time.

I think I may have figured out what's causing it. I'm over 50 rep with the UC so I'm an ally. When they previously put my wanted characters in cells when I turned them in, I wasn't an ally yet. I was just messing around with the cells just trying stuff, and I got caught and lost enough reputation to go below 50, and the chief immediately put the guy in a cell and started to attack my other squad member that was caught committing a crime.

Well, that makes sense to me because I almost always ally with the UC, lol. Nice work.

Small update on this.

After discovering that it could partially be related to being an ally of the UC, I reloaded my save just prior to the shenanigans that lowers my reputation and continued playing from there to do another test. I loaded up the poor captive with food and continued to play as normal waiting for his bounty timer to run out (it was around 170 hours). It just ran out while playing tonight, and upon expiring, the chief immediately put the guy down. Just figured I'd add that bit in case someone else runs into the same issue and doesn't want to do anything too crazy or is in a position where they'd prefer not to import.

If a fight broke out and the chief went to fight, he might drop you if he was knocked unconscious.

Yep, but he never went down or had an arm crippled in any fights he was in. He'd even go help with fights at the gate, and the most that happen to him was getting a crippled leg for a while and hobbling around with my recruit.
