1) the red and black stick figure on the speed button makes everyone travel with same speed, however better method is to make others guard for the leader (bc the latter prevents animals killing your chars one by one when the others run far without noticing one was attacked)
2) do not build a base too soon, buy a townhouse and train your chars in relative safety. Building a base WILL trigger raids semi-regularly to your base. There are few spots you can build a safe base early on, but it requires selling your soul to a faction.
3) skeletons (droids) do not eat, so they are good to automate your base, as often workers get stuck somewhere and cannot access food.
4) there is a hauling bug, have one char supply a crafting station and another to serve the storage. If one char does both you have an infinity loop.
As for combat, there isn't really a right way to do things. I would grind strength up to level 20-30. You can use any weapon class though I would recommend katanas as they help train dexterity really quickly. Toughness naturally builds up if you get in a lot of fights, which you'll probably be doing anyways so don't worry about it.
The beginning of the game is just getting a character/s to the point where they can actually handle themselves in combat and not be constantly broke. Once you get to that point just do whatever you want.
I would recommend buying a house and build a bed to rest and heal and build some training dummies. It's a pretty small investment of time and copper to get the cats needed to buy the supplies needed.
You don't actually HAVE to do any research in the tree to play Kenshi, but if you intend to build a base you will have to do research for a lot of things.
Wipe out all slave holding nations and establish a new and beautiful world of peace and harmony; or not.
In one game I'm building a 200+ person army to sweep north and east to wipe out all slave holding nations in one big wave. That was an easy start game.
In another game I just started I've decided to do the escape from Rebirth which is a hard start.
The more you try to do whatever it is you want in Kenshi the more the game will become 'that' in the play through. If you want to change anything about the game there is a mod for that change somewhere in the workshop.
Then with your effectively free 50-100k cats you can buy some average gear and build your skills in the land of cheese and honey known as the foglands until you're ready to head out to somewhere new whenever you can stand your ground.
