Cooking stove: how does it work?!
Anyone that can help me out? returned to kenshi after a long time and new to food, ive been fine for a while but now im trying to figure out how to use a cooking stove? i have 100 raw meat in storage barrels right next to the cooking stove, and its powered, and all i want to do is just cook a ton of dried meat, but all my guy can seem to do is cook one meat then he stops? anyone know how or even if i can get him to cook a ton of meat repeatedly?

did you add the order via crafting menu?

for cooking raw meat non-stop, I find camp fire more useful. But take note that some construction (assassination dummy) requires raw meat. (I don't want to know why.. lol)

yeah i have like 80 dried meat orders in the que, but still he seems to cook one then stop. Campfire is how ive been cooking so far but that is only 5 in a row, so i thought a cooking stove would be an improvement on that but maybe not?

If you're queuing the food production then you might be missing a food storage container. If you don't have the "correct" container they won't move the goods when a machine is full. Bread requires a bread basket etc

If you remove the result, does the cooking start again?
If so, then you have one of these problems:
- no container for the result in reach
- no space for the transfer of the result in the inventory of the cook
- something else :)

When my scripts were bugged like that I tried the following, I gave the cook as first (before the cooking) order the order to move things to the result box.
So if there is a result, he moves it, THEN he tries to cook.
This has a lot of problems and is not what you really want, but it could get you going.

Ah yes.. food container needed.
I can get camp fire to work nonstop (using job) but it also require a food container so that the 5 cooked meat will be auto moved.

The difference from stove is that stove has manual queueing which is preferred sometimes (like when I want to save some raw meat)

ahhhhh ok well yeah the issue seems to be that he does nothing with the 1 dried meat he produces i assume if he could empty it, it would all work continually but im now realizing i didn't even know about the job system. so how is it that i order my cook to automatically empty the cooking stove into a nearby container? is there a special container for dried meat?

food container should work for all food.
afaik, you don't need to add separate task for the container. just create a job on the stove. The cook should move the finished food to the food container by himself.

Some food types did not go into the generic food container the last time I played.
For example bread does not go into the normal food container but into its own container. Good thing is, your people will get the food from the bread container just like from the food container, even if the description does not seem that way.

Thanks for the info! I stopped at the "dried meat and cooked vege" tier have yet to moved into "bread tier" so this is totally unknown to me.

A little sidetrack: is bread worth it? the efforts of setting up + the extra step (flour). compared to something fast like cooked vege (well the nu/space for vege is certainly crappy)

I haven't gone there myself, but bread is a precursor ingrediant for foodcubes (with greenfruit), meatwraps (with raw meat), and dustwiches (with catus); foodcubes can be combined with dried meat to make ration packs, which are by a wide margin the best food item in Nu/size and Nu/Kg.

Hm, bread is required for all foods more energy-dense than it (in both size and weight) and all of the top foods in nu/unit, EXCEPT gohan.

You actually inspired me to go add recipe notes to my Kenshi Food Spreadsheet[docs.google.com] and generally make it prettier. I need to find a place to link this at some point.

THAT (the spreadsheet) is SO useful!

I love bread, because I can create bread completely without any power.

Benefit of bread for me is my base is in the wastelands, where greenfruit farms have 10% yield rate - you get about 4 green fruits per harvest so it's not very productive. Wheat is a much better crop and if not supplied with water, doesnt die. It might sound a bit more intensive but it's really not. You can have 5 wheatfields, flour maker and bread maker with just a few full time workers.

I was hoping to check out your spreadsheet, I know this is an old thread but steam is telling me the link is malicious. Did you ever move the data to a website?

Just copy and paste the link it gives into your browser. It's just an online spreadsheet from Google Docs.
