Kenshi
How do I buy a pack animal?
Sorry if this is a noob question. I'm trying to follow Jimbob's Comprehensive Guide to Kenshi, one of the guides available on steam, but I don't know how to buy a pack animal.

You'll find traders who sell animals. You have to keep them fed so keep that in mind. If you have a base, one will eventually come to you

You can also go to Holy Nation farms to buy one. There are United City shops which sell them. There is a Nomad Village North East of the Swamps which sells them.

You can find nomad caravans travelling between towns. You can buy their wild bulls which are better than pack bulls or domestic bulls but you need to buy backpacks.

Or buy garru instead, which come with a pack by default and can stack a bit higher than bull packs.

Animal Trader caravans are pretty common in The Border Zone, just FYI.

But, what I really wanted to post is that this is one of the few thing I think needs an additional mod to help out:

The above is only for bonedogs/dog types. Why suggest it? Garru and Bulls can feed themselves from suitable food stored in their Packs. Bonedogs, in case you want to buy one/several, don't have any backpacks for them in "vanilla" so they have to be fed by hand. (Characters will automatically do it if they have food available.) And, either you have characters that will have to do that or you have to manually dump food on the ground very close for them to pick up. A backpack for them makes caring for them so very much easier.

There is/are compilation mods for backpacks for all sorts of animals. The above is the only one I use. IIRC, there's probably one for "goats" too, in case you're interested.

No conflicts or issues that I know of and bonedogs are quite happy with their backpacks in my playthroughs. :)

Yeah the dogs don't have a bag to feed from but they get to eat limbs!

True but I prefer to buy garrus in later game when I'm ready to build my outpost. For early game, wild bulls are more useful for combat assisting low stats characters, garrus not so much.

Fair point, I just prefer to start growing my animals early so I have elders by the time I'm setting up an outpost :)

Have your characters pick up and carry garru pups to towns for supplies till they're elders and ready to run along with your squad. That works. Pack animals consume too much food, this is why I prefer minimum numbers until I can build animal feeders at my outpost.
