The Hub as Base
Just wondering, since the Hub have many house to be bought, just thinking on buying most of the damage house there, rebuilt it, set a farm near to the town to supply my squad with food, and basically turning the city to my base. Is this feasable? What about power?
Asking before i spent some time building and spending money only to find out some restriction is in place.
I can set up also some mining nearby. My squad is around 30 people, mostly all in theirs 50-60 stat, i think we can manage on guarding such a large area.

It's very doable; I've done it a bit myself.

Power is already displayed in the town stats, but it may be a limiting factor as you won't be able to build any more power units in the city. I'm not sure if any batteries you build help in this regard.

I have done that many times, in various towns. However, I was living off the shops. Meaning, I purchased food, leather, iron plates, etc., from shops. I then input that into the weapon/armor stations I built in the town(s). I do not venture out to form my own outpost until I am as armed/armored as I can be. I also limit myself to no more than 5 characters until I head out for good to build that outpost.

It is an entertaining way to play for me. I do not mine any ore as long as I am living in a town. Good challenge.

I also attempted to do what you are typing about once in the Hub. I ran into power issues very soon. I eventually had to build some things outside, west side of town on the plateau. Of course that triggered Dust Bandit and Ninja raids.

Yea, i guess power will be the limiting factor.
To totally live off the city, that city must be well equiped and developed, and not a broken city like the Hub.
My other concern is attack on the city itself.
I guess i cannot control the gate to be closed or open.
Does anyone know other city which offer around 2-3 big building for purchase?

Just did some reading, for the power, you can build small wind generator to add to the city power.
Pyrrhus Oct 7, 2020 @ 11:04pm
You could put small windmills on roof closely together to produce enough electricity and there's moisture collector mod taking water out of air you can put on roof too for hydroponic to support power generator. Some player's builds cannot be built at hub like refineries, wells, large windmills, corpse & item furnace, outdoor crops, etc but you could build them nearby. Auto jobs between outpost and hub might not at least work or at all.

Around 30 characters in 50-60 stats can easily defend Hub and you would be ready for your own outpost almost anywhere.

Mourn is like the other hub. They have numbers of buildings you can buy to rebuild but they have more dangerous wildlife in area. Bandits there are stronger too.

I did this at one point, having farms/mines outside the town means those become your outpost == raids. Also the journey up-and-down the hill is tough for the pathfinding. The characters cannot automatically run to the mine and back up, the route is too far, means you need to send them to carry items manually. Which is kinda ok, as you need to follow the runners anyways because the danger of raid. I´d set up some hydrofarms inside, the land is not so fertile around the Hub anyways.

you forgot to mention the big king kong living inside the HQ. lol
btw, i probally will try mourn as it serve as a more challenging base. Will also live off from the bar as my main food source while selling armour plate for cat to buy the food.

My favorite town to live out of is Squin. I purchase the long house at the south end of the town. Can fit everything you need in that space. Bonus, the general store is close enough to trade with from the house with inventories open.

Mongrel ftw, it has everything. A nice big Y house to buy, thiefs guild, high-end weapons/armor/prostetics, a never ending stream of fog men to train with + nice loot from fog princes, the most OP warrior in the game to hire for FREE, labs to farm not far to the north etc... I settled in many towns but Mongrel is my #1.

Oh, and there's a free source of something that you have to find out yourself :D

Mongrel may be good for vanilla, default or lower numbers of npc in wild settings, not for max settings, even with hive expanded mod, which would overwhelm Mongrel while player characters still sticking around in the area long enough.

I would recommend that if you do this, you use a mod that allows you to build all the needed workstations/growing areas inside a town without them establishing a "Player Base." There are a couple out there, but I don't know which is the best.

Establishing a farm plot outside of town, being sure that it is fairly far outside the town's borders so it won't get "absorbed" by the Town, will start you down the path of "Events" and you won't likely be ready for that.

I always consider basing my group out of the Hub when I'm not planning on building a base. It's got plenty of room and is in a very good location with quick and relatively safe access to several towns/Waystations.

Yes you're right. In my current playthrough the whole thiefs guild got wiped out, except the trader. I had to rescue him a few times lol. If he gets eaten too I will just import my save, so it's not that of a big deal.

I currently have a self sufficient base already, and it get kind of boring. This will provide some challenge and RP. A group of people re-estabilish a town and making it live again instead of a city/base just pop out of nowhere with wall and such. It does not kind of make sense to have the technology and the resource to built it. I choosing this since it more RP sense while.

This is exactly what I have done on my first playthrough. Not on purpose, I just bought a shack in town to do research and store food. I intended to set out and pick an ideal spot for a base but I kept adding things and needed a farm for my crew.

The north hill is where my "base" is. This is farming and industry with a wall around it. In The Hub is the armory, smithing, research and a ton of storage. I intended just to have farming out there with no walls but a certain type of base raid let them run around stealing food from food storage.

The benefit is if you keep your food in The Hub that doesn't get stolen during raids. If you see that particular faction is scheduled for a raid you can move your food to The hub. That is until your defenses are strong enough to wreck the weak factions that raid in this area.

don't build your base directly inside the Hub
build your buildings to the north next to the store.
there's room for farms that you will need.
There are materials like iron and copper that you will need
the store owner has also rather high level guards (very useful in case strong enemies occur)
He is also useful to sell copper to, so you can feed your chars at the beginning
i started building there too at my first try (Hub), but quickly realized that it's just a money dump
The elecitrity is not a problem at all... just build a windmill.

i say north of hub served me extremely well... so well... i'm currently at my second run and nearly build at the very same place.
