A guy with a dog
I am attempting my 7th start as a guy with a dog. The previous 6 went something like this;
For gameplay purposes "died" = myself or the wolf killed. I am a Shek, I have 13 cats, no food, a bit of bandage at 30/150 and a Rusted Junk Iron Stick.

1. Died 2 minutes after spawning to Holy Nation patrol.
2. Died 1 minute after spawning to UC patrol.
3. Died on day 7 to cannibals, inside the bar, as Deadcat Fisherman watched dispassionately.
4. Died on day 4 to a pack of wolves, could not run fast enough.
5. Died 15 minutes after spawning in to cannibals, ran down.
6. Just now, snuck and hid my way to Old Town, was starving and passing out. Wolf was unconscious, I was carrying him. Cheapest food in bar was 60(ish) cats, I had 13. Managed to steal a bowl and a splint kit. Purchased some Dried Meat. Stole some Steel Bars upstairs, not seen, as I stepped out the door of the building I was jumped due to thievery. Stumbled out of main gate, Mercenary hit me, I fell down unconscious. He picked me up, stood for 3 seconds then dropped me. I lay there and bled out. Dog died 3 seconds before I did.

I have only managed to get out of Bast two times. Everything is hostile to a Shek. Run speed is 13, wolf can only manage 7.

Here is hoping this will be lucky #7.

I haven't tried a guy with dog but I would pick up and carry the dog to a town, recruit someone to baby sit the dog until rest of characters are ready to deal with bandits involving the dog. I have a crab that has athletics over 95 but still runs at 13 mph. I just use it to guard the gate with an animal feeder next to.

I am not allowed to recruit anything with 2 legs for combat purposes, only 4. I also cannot sell ore, only a finished product. I am not complaining, I prefer when a game knocks me down. Makes that getting back up and pressing on part much sweeter.

Besides, if I carry the wolf it does not gain any stats.

In fact on the 8th run I thought, screw it. I am tired of sneaking around and hiding only to be killed anyway. This time I spawned in, clicked on Northern Coast and let them go. I set the camera to follow and enjoyed the scenery. They ran straight to the darn coast, no issues. Go figure!

As luck would have it, moving west along the coast towards Fishing Village was a troop of Flotsam Ninja and Tech Hunters. I had the 2 walk along with them. Strolled into the village without a care.

Something odd did happen though. There were three Bonedogs that attacked the ninjas, of course the wolves were killed. I harvested them and sold the teeth and pelts to Maggie. She is the fish monger just at the village gate. As I walked into the gate she said, here you look like you could use this more than me, and gave me a fish. I did not actually see a fish, but when I looked at the characters food bar it was moving up. At this stage she has given me a gift, and purchased my goods, seemed fair.

A short time later I was walking back into town and she attacked me, beat me down and left me bleeding and unconscious on the ground as she walked away. I still have no idea what that was about.

Scorchlander, Hive Prince, Skeleton, or as much as i hate this race Hive Soldier are the best races to start, when you do start head towards the great desert and you will run into an old broken town full of samurai guards and has a bar in it, here you can buy food.
That's a tough start as a Shek. I've done it a few times as a Greenlanders and it's pretty good because you can loot a bunch of stuff from UC vs. HN fights and creep your way over to World's End, but as a Shek you're a long way from anywhere friendly.

I understand those make it easier, not what I am trying to do though. I am sticking with the Shek and by george I will make it back to the Shek kingdom. For it is there I will live, get stronger and police the area. I will do this while at the same time expanding into a large wolf pack.

Indeed, I did have one interaction I did not detail above, it surprised me and gave me a little bit of hope for decency in the world. A UC samurai hailed me and accused me of being poor, which is a crime. He was going to arrest me. I told him, I am not poor. He asked for proof, I should display some cats. Unfortunately I only had 13, he was not impressed. He then told me he could tell I was poor because I was so thin, obviously I could not even afford food. I replied, I just have angular bones. He stared at me a moment, then handed me some food and told me to get away from here, gathered his men and marched on. Touching.

The Holy Nation has never even tried to engage in conversation, they attack on sight. Something to remember when I have grown my pack.

I feel your pain. I tried the same, but with a skelly. Went about as well as you'd imagine, lol.

Now on the 9th start, day 22, made it to Fishing Village. There are stretches of days where cannibals do not attack the fisherman which means no bodies to loot. Ran out of cats, could no longer afford food.

Cannibals seen in distance fighting something, crept closer to see. A lone skeleton is surrounded by approx 21 cannibals. He is severely damaged, about ready to drop when a herd of goats roam through. Some of the cannibals attack the goats, just as the skeleton falls. Of course the cannibals cannot eat the skeleton so they kill a few goats and leave. I run in, loot the skeleton of its repair kit and commence repairing it. Once it is repaired it starts playing dead. This gives me an opportunity to replace the repair kit, I am no thief. I then proceed to loot about 5 goats and the few dead/dying cannibals. The food and skins are enough to bring me and Alpha, (my first bonedog), back up to full health.

I needed a more reliable way to make cats than scavenging dead cannibals. I built a Small Shack and Small Research Bench. I erect a Stone Mine and a Manual Stone Processor. I labor for several days living on goat meat until there are 10 Building Materials to sell. There was one cannibal raid during this time, but there was nothing I could do but hide as 20 or so captured a couple of Deadcat fishermen. There were no cannibals downed, nothing to loot.

I received notification of a caravan heading to my outpost. Continued to labor producing Building Materials and increasing cats amount. Now having approx 3000 cats I was able to purchase a traders backpack, which is worth every cat, let me tell you. Eventually the caravan arrived and I was able to purchase 2 research books. This allowed me to place an Iron Refinery. With a few more books I am now producing Iron Plates. These are providing me with enough cats to maintain a steady diet for us.

Still a very long way to go, and the lack of city guards mean even running inside the village to avoid attacks is a no go.

Good luck with the settlement, GIJoe597, and congratulations on persevering. Thoroughly enjoyed reading these posts and hearing that you're slowly getting ahead in true Kenshi fashion.

I'm doing a similar thing. "1 man 'n' his dog" we're called.
It's absolutely brutal. Bought her as a defenceless pup. Too slow to keep up.
Had her head caved in a couple times.
Got carved up for food while I was knocked out once.
Our settlements just get raided, as I can't solo repair the gates fast enough.
In the end I bought a place in a city and became a weapon smith.
I guess you gotta be responsible when you have dependants.
