farming biome question
I am having trouble understanding biome yield .
Looking at the wiki Here: https://kenshi.fandom.com/wiki/Farming

So If I am Farming In An arid: 100% green 10% area, (seemingly half of the map), I should have the following yields with each crop:

cactus: 100
wheat: 50
Hemp: 40
greenfruit/cotton: 10

If an Item is at 10 percent yield, does that mean that it takes littereally ten times as many workers and fields to get the same amount as one worker in a 100 percent yeild biome? Or is it some kind of logarithmic scale? Is there anyway to negate the penalty? It seems that farrming something at ten percent efficiency Is almost completely innefective....

though i suppose that in this case I would not need to farm cotton/greenfruit, as I can farm hemp. can i get in trouble for farming/carrying hemp if i dont turn it into hashish?

This is how I understand it but I may be incorrect.
If an item is 10% yield it means that assuming a worker with 100 skill in farming is working the plot, they'll only succeed in getting something 10% of the time. By contrast even if the yield on a crop is 100% if the workers skill in farming is very low you'll still see them fail a lot until they get their skill up.

The ability to harvest successfully without destroying a piece of the crop is dependent on two factors, the workers skill in farming + the yield %.

I'm not sure if just carrying hemp is considered a crime in some places, I don't remember ever getting nailed for carrying it around.

Well Hydroponics would be something id research, my base is out in heng with no plowable soil and the only way i could keep my team fed was using hydroponics.

bear in mind, even that needs watered. but i use a mod that has powered moisture collectors that pull it from the atmosphere as the water quality sucks so bad. as long as you have building materials and those two things, you can build anywhere.

if you build hemp farms in the UC. you will get busted if they happen across it.

If i have the hemp farms inside my walled base, and the gate is open, will they wander in and discover it?

Why would you ever leave your gate open?

that way my people can walk outside to mine iron and auto-haul it back.

That's why my mines are *inside* the walls.

UC? So what, kill them.

There are some places where you can grow both cotton and cactus, among with other crops whether you hydroponic or not. On border of Venge, Stormgap Coast, and the Eye, good flat land for building kill box walls. That spot has good yields for both cotton and cactus, but need to build cactus farm little bit up north and cotton farm little bit to south separately, not right next to each others. You could either stretch out the wall little further around cactus farms or to have a few farmers travel outside of wall just to harvest cactus. That spot is still within UC and Trader Guild's territories that they both would tax you.

You might want to try SE of Stormgap Coast near Fishing Village but is on border of UC territory, still outside of Trader Guild's, there's a chance for your base not to attract UC depending on how within their territory your base is.

........ Isn't the point of building a base supposed to be that it's something of a challenge, not just choosing one of the 5 best places that every body else is building in? the game seems to be balanced so that you can build in arid areas, you just are slightly less efficient at farming, and somewhat dangerous do to being forced to use hashish instead of cotton.

Simply kill the UC? yeah, my dozen hobos armed with scavanged gear and homade weapons are for sure a mach for a litteral army of samurai.

Just think of how much toughness your battle hobos will gain after being whupped by all those samurai. Sweet sweet toughness xp.

Wandering samurai patrols and merchant caravans will head into your city and spot the fields as long as your gates are open. As someone mentioned above I'd suggest hydroponics, you can farm hydroponic hemp inside a building thats set to private. That way wandering samurai groups won't spot your stash.

Or you can just keep your gate closed? The UC patrols won't try to break in, so you're all good.

First place I ever built was in the middle of the desert, now the place is too much like home for me to leave.

They said they keep their gates open, so I suggested an option that lets them do that.

I build my towns so the ore nodes are inside my walls, but the OP apparently did not. Its no use to argue how someone plays their single player game so I don't bother.
