EVER.
Contrary to popular belief it does rain in the desert in the real world. The soil just dont hold the water to allow other types of vegetation to grow.
If Vain were a plain, then it would be flooded from the rain.
"But Vain isn't a plain," most remark with disdain.
To dwell within Vain, one must be insane.
To coexist with the creatures that want to eat your brain.
The Moisture Farming mod is really good and not cheaty at all since it has to be researched, requires a decently sized building to plant it in, water collects slwer than a good well, and requires power to keep it running.
Its what I use for my hydroponics setup in Hub. I have it installed in the building next to the bar with 5 small windmills on the roof to power the operation.

I use the Hub as a training grounds for my new recruits and as a resupply base when traveling on the western side of the map. I just leave a couple hive workers in the building farming and cooking while my recruits are out beating on bandits and my main troops are exploring or dealing with larger threats. If you do something like that just make sure to set the building to private and lock the door to keep the occasional passing groups of starving bandits, traders and slavers out.
Not true. Well is jsut one of the bulidings on the "claim land" list. Which almost all of them are.
