The game plays like a RTS, RPG & Survival hybrid. The vanilla game is a bit light on content so all you can really do is have your units by the mid/late game, build a HQ & kill whoever they can handle fighting against.
Melee combat boils down primarily to who has the higher stats.
So early/mid game will be primarily just farming xp, followed by more xp grinding & grinding for currency.
In the vanilla game ranged combat is very op as most enemies are melee only.
Late game will be very similar to mid game but with a little less xp farming.
Usually just having your units killing faction leaders & bosses by late game.
The typical end game is when all bosses & enemy faction leaders are dead.
Most people who still play this game prefer to heavily mod it.
There are a great many mods that fix most of the many issues with vanilla (meaning not modded) Kenshi. If you buy this game I advise going to the workshop page & very heavily modding it.
Be warned that some people will not seperate vanilla Kenshi & modded Kenshi apart in their minds. Vanilla Kenshi over all is an ok product, very flawed, but not bad. With mods it can be very fun.
I hope my comment was informative enough for you, happy shopping.

I use a great many mods but there are a handful that are a must to fix issues with the vanilla game.
256. It's a mod that will massively increase player unit limit. Removes the 30 unit limit, ups limit to 256 units, you would NEVER need that many but removing the 30 unit cap is pretty good.
Viable Hive Soldiers. In vanilla kenshi one of the playable races your units can be is called a "Hive Soldier Drone". The devs ruined their stats so they are considered the worse unit in vanilla, despite them being intended for combat. This mod fixes that.
There are some large factions that the dev team literally gave nothing, so they take up a lot of the map but are just nude & pointless. These are high quality mods that fix them. By greatly fleshing them out.
Cannibals Expanded, Hive Expanded & Shrieking Bandits Expanded. This way you don't have literal armies of nude pointless enemy units with no reason to exist! :D
Animal Hunger Disabled, this mod will make it so your pets don't starve to death. In vanilla kenshi any pets you have will require absurd amounts of food & food is very expensive, thus making the animals not worth having.
Clothing & armor variety sucks in Kenhi so it's your pick what mods you choose to fix that.
Many great mods for it.
More Combat Animation. In vanilla kenshi, of the many forms of melee combat, only 1 has your unit unlock better moves as you level them up & that is unarmed. This mod makes it so that as your units get better at their weapons, they also get better attack animations, making them much more deadly. Great animations in this mod.
Reactive World. This will make the game have far more world states/events, vanilla has too few. To know what a world state is, look it up on the Wiki.
There are a great many quality of life mods around so I advise you to very thoroughly browse the workshop for whatever catches your eye.
[Shopping] Let the Cats out of the Bag, this mod adds an in game economy. Without this mod there is no reason to open a shop in any of the towns as literally no npc will buy from you cause they are all too poor & cannot gain wealth, this mod fixes it.
Recruitable Prisoners. Consider this mod optional, it serves a great function, anyone you capture & cage in your own facilities, you can attempt to recruit. In vanilla you have no reason to ever make any sort of prison as you cannot recruit most characters. The reason this mod is optional is that it adds a lot of dialogue & some of it can be very cringe worthy.
Weaklings Give XP. This mod's description explains it's purpose on the page, I consider this a must have. Makes the game (slightly) less of a grind.
There are many more amazing mods out there so go have fun browsing.
Also a big warning for a new player (you). Building a base is to only be done in the mid to late game. A base attracts monsters/animals & raids from whatever local factions are in the region your base resides.
By default the amount of raids that happen will be ABSURD.
(literally can have thousands of enemies attack in 2 weeks time, that is literally unplayable in this game made for small scale skirmishes, no I have no idea why the devs did this)
Go into the options menu & tone anything to do with raids, waaaaaaay down, trust me lad.
Early on, if you feel the need to have a home so your unit/units can research, heal up, store their extra gear ect. Save up money & buy a home from any of the great many cities in the game. If the city has multiple shops then it might be a good option.
I suggest your units be mid level before building a base (stats around 40-50), high level if the base will be in a very dangerous area.
Edit Note: Only humans (greenlanders & scorchlanders) are allowed to live in Holy Nation territory. (the faction that rules most of the center territories). None humans will be treated as slaves. Also if a human has prosthetics they are not welcome (for religious reasons the Holy Nation will attack you on sight if your characters have prosthetic limbs) They are also distrustful / hostile to robots.
For my playthrough over 200hour over this one and I m still in midgame I faild like 5 boss attempt for some i couldnt even pass their guard I lost so many mens with good stats trying to get their high tier weapon
Reaching late game is hard you migh get wiped before that with this mod if you pissed of the wrong people even with 40 people defending my base and 20 people in my main squad the one i use to raid village explore etc
And when I know i m getting raid I need to pull back my mens to defend my base because i know 40 people isnt enough to hold an assault with one Inquisitor from holy nation
If you are afraid to be bored once you reach late game just download this mod you ll enjoy every minute from early mid and late (if you reach it lol)
then, once you get your bearings, you wipe out the HN like the rest of us when you harbor that hate for their zealous xenophobia from previous playthroughs. it's pretty much a rite of passage, w/ slavers being a close second in needed vengeance
