You have a few races to chose from (a few human races, a few human-like insects, robots and big guys who look kinda like the Qunari from Dragon Age), and a few starting scenarios (a trader, two deserters, a guy with a dog, a slave, a guy being hunted by cannibals...). You have a pretty complete character editor, and then you're thrown out into the wide open-world. At that point, you do what you want.
You can decide you want to live the life of a trader, going from town to town bartering for money and goods, some less legal than others. Or you might want to play as a wanderer and explore the world for post-apocalyptic secrets. Or perhaps you'd rather be a badass bounty hunter? Or decide you'd like to build a massive base, recruit an army and lead the fight against oppression.
Or you can just be a guy in a shack along the coast. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Crab Raiders.
Game's got a Steam workshop too, so if you think there's something missing in your game, chances are someone has made a mod for it.
the game is fun and the mods can do a LOT of fun stuff
