Later, some special sabers have nice bonuses against certain enemy types, so they're worth training up for a few characters if you expect to be dealing a lot with those enemy types. (Some other weapons have better bonuses against certain enemy types, but late-game sabers have a wider spread of bonuses.)
This is one of the things I love about this game - weapon selection often comes down to what you do for a living and who you've made enemies with.
hackers seem like a decent choice for heavy melee troops. the generic long cleavers have bonus armor penetration and the special "paladin cross" (also "hacker" class) has huge damage bonus vs. robots (but reduced vs. humans, so not a very good general purpose weapon).
don't know if sabers are worthwhile. they are basically just reverse katanas with defense bonus and attack penalty. maybe if you have a bunch of defensive melee guys in taunt mode "tanking" for squishy high dps crossbow snipers
