Shek has elevated hunger rates, so swamps is nice for easy water access and easy plants if it were not for reduced mineral richness and nastier wildlife including the glass cannons themselves: spiders.
I have done other alternate locations like the Leviathan Coast on the NW map quadrant, any coastlands with your preferred biomes.
I would advise avoiding cannibals or fogmen areas entirely when base building, especially when it comes to cannibal raids. Do so only when you are fully prepared with the tech and combat experience to take on the hungry hordes.
Something else came across my mind: If one of the Shek has high enough assassination skill to knock out high value bounties, there is something from the Skin Bandits that you could also use to amputate your Sheks for the cyborg route... provided they can survive the procedure from critical blood loss. That is assuming that your Shek did not lose an arm or a leg from your whole run up to this point.
Shek can be tanky enough to exclusively use martial arts, made even more tanky if their prosthetic limbs are crafted masterwork. (might probably give incentive for you to repair robots that you beat up, using repair kits looted from them)
If you can get a base up and running and protected with walls and turrets in an area where there are hostile animals, you probably won't have any issues getting raw meat. If there are animals that don't aggro easily, you can toggle on the option for "Shoot First, Ask Questions Later" for your turret gunners. They should start shooting as soon as a potential target comes into range.
If you can mine enough until then, you shouldn't have an issue buying enough food in Shek cities. They usually have a good supply of food items in the bars. (Meatwraps and fish in abundance.)
