I was able to buy 8 Ancient Science books from the Travel and Repair shop in Flats Lagoon.
If you wish to travel to Flats Lagoon, avoid the Swamp and go through Shem. From my experience, sometimes there are Beak Things in Shem but I never ran into many over there and it's easy enough to go around them, compared to the spiders in the Swamp.
There's also a mod called General Modifications which includes a Writing Desk. You can place Half-Eaten Science books and parchments in there to craft Ancient Science books.
Did this with a solo character and hit the grid and the crater. Walked away with 15 or 20 ancient books and 3 engineer research.
In the end though some spots are pretty much impossible to clear without having a good force of soldiers [like 5-10] with around 30+ combat skills.
I mean it's your business, but what is the point of cheating when you can enjoy yourself raiding, and exploring ? Nothing more adrenaline rushing after clearing the ruins, than picking that safe with your most skilled thief, and wondering what is inside, and how many ancient books it holds.
To each it's own
Still though a lot of the fun to me was getting strong enough to find and survive those places :d.
I don't think resetting a ruin is a feature, and you will get everything you need because there are always more ruins/labs/libraries to explore.
I don't see how resetting is a feature other than cheating. The idea of having many treasures sites is for you to be able to excavate, and move on to get more treasures. In Rl if you cleared a tomb of all it's gold you did your job.
How fair would it be if you keep resetting and get triple of what you got out of your first adventure ,and I might be wrong but seriously no game let's you milk.
I'm not talking about milking a ruin repeatedly though. I was pointing out that it's probably impossible to complete your tech trees if RNG craps out. Unless things have changed in about the last 2 years since I last did the heavy ruins explorations it was possible to hit all the end tier zones back then and come up without nearly enough to do anything but finish one or two trees, like say defenses and farming.
On my current run if I get to that point again I'll still be resetting and clearing them all one by one to make sure I can finally finish it this time since I still had craptons of recipes still not unlocked.
I might be wrong but I am guessing Chris Hunt's motive was making the tech tree a bit similiar to LIF,where you have to be smart, and really decide on what tree you want to go down.
Perhaps you only get to have so many skills and abilties so they only give you so many books to scribe, and I am ok with that because you can always buy anything you need.
I would just go down the most important trees if this is the case, and I am fine with that because you don't need to master every ability because it would be too easy lol
It's good being self sufficient but you don't need to learn every craft to win this game. If you wanted to you can survive on the shop, and still win whatever your goal is.
I guess that makes sense, but feels kinda borked. Either way I ended up with more than enough that run to max out Armorsmithing/Weaponsmithing but couldn't make my own towers and only had one or two hydroponics [Which I wished I never got once I realised they were kindof useless since I stupidly chose plants I could already grow really well outside where I settled.]
Either way that files still tucked away. When I tried to return to it a single large battle group of HN soldiers were able to wipe the floor with me when in the past I'd have curb stomped them, so my understanding of how to properly micro the battles has apparently went completely out the window. Heck that file was from before Crossbows were even a thing.
Yes I have a plan on what tech I want to go down to fit my playstyle, and live my life on the planet {or wherever Kenshi takes place lol} I would say anything that is rare or very important for suvival, and isn't very common to find or buy would be the ideal tech to go down.
Now you can go down every skill that requires regular research books so get every skill you can with those books, and even if you only have half of that ability or skill you still have it,and it adds to benefit your tribe. If you only have your power ability to half that is fine, and a it doesn't have to be maxed or perfect,it's just as long as you can use your electric appliances.
In RL we all don't buy the best product when we buy a product. Here in Sweden we are pretty much minimalist lol Our houses are not too big,our cars are not German, and our furniture is from IKEA. Why must we buy the best to use something ?
On Kenshi, and I doubt we are going to have "everything" perfect when we decide on what skills we want. If you want it perfect in weapon making you will have the best player made weapons, but not all the crops on this game, and a will not be a gamebreaker ? No because you can always buy fabric from the shops when cotton was needed or you can buy electric parts that required the robotics skill to make.
I didn't even bother with anything in training to make dummies/boxes etc because you have a life pass when you join the shinobis, and they have everything you need to be a great thief or assassin so I didn't even waste my good books on those.
You will still get alot of books, and you will be able to research alot of beneficial skills. That is enough for me.
I will never reload or reset just to get to research everything because I don't think the mechanics were made for that. I do see that as exploiting.
What you can't make you can always steal lol
A vast majority of locations where they can be looted are guarded by powerful enemies and many require a high lockpicking skill to obtain. It can be quite easy for a highly skilled stealth character to retrieve them without a fight. Crossbows can make short work of security spiders, and they're also slow enough to lure and distract while someone else goes in to loot. Otherwise, just keep training.
Someone else said this I think but the trader at Flats Lagoon definitely has a few for sale.
I also visited Fish Isle in the South West just the other day and found quite a few goodies in the tower, including AI cores. There are like 10,000 fishmen on the top level only, so I was able to sneak around and clear the bottom levels after knocking out just one guy. I'm p sure there were ancient science books.
Otherwise buy maps specifically for ancient libraries. They normally are unguarded inside unlike the labs, in my experience, and often have at least a couple books.
