I installed a mod to deal with the dearth of Ancient Science Books: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1611880192
I wanted to experience as much of the game as possible on my first playthrough, so the lack of availability of research items is an issue. I also didn't want to have end up with a lot of effort expended for a "no happy finish" adventure into "Welcome to Having All Your Limbs Replaced Adventure Module #28." Or worse...
The mod only touches what it says it touches, too, and it's not heavy-handed. With a large group, one could "exploit" it by sending everyone, everywhere, but then that's a difficulty all its own, so it's not too overpowered.
I assume it could be easily tweaked to even lower chance percentages. So far, I think it's still a fairly random enough chance to find them but it should probably be reduced further if one wants to experience more of a "grindy" kind of progression, requiring an entire playsession to yield one book.
In principle, I am against cutesy mechanics that artificially extend gameplay. I don't think the research mechanics and the rarity of certain items is intended to do that. I think it's a workaround for other things, like "dynamic tech trees" sorts of experiences, where one isn't always guaranteed to have the same kind of research experiences every game. But, I think it's a wee bit too much, sometimes, and RNG can kill it pretty hard.
Just to annoy folks, dead thread but coming back after years of waiting for the bugs to be patched and still haven't found enough books lol.
You can run while sneaking at that level too.
