Kenshi
How do I improve in combat? It's impossible for me.
I've only been playing for 2 days and the truth is that I love it.

But I can't understand how to fight.

First I tried to make a base with walls, but always end up getting inside bandits so I abandoned it.

Is it necessary to have a big group to be able to fight?

I feel like I have 5 members but I'm always at a numerical disadvantage and they beat me, I don't want to have to command an army.

In the end I decided to buy a house in Squin and evolve there safely, but I would like to be able to fight in some fair way ....

Tips for a rookie?

"I don't want to have to command an army" is the key sentence to why you are losing. Why don't you want to command an arny ? You don't want to be a leader ? You don't want to take charge, and have fun thinking up great tactics ? This is why you do not know how to fight because you have a lazy attitude to begin with. What is the point of fighting when you have no strategy, and don't care about your tribe ?

Yes you can run and hide out at Squin but you are going to miss out on melee skills, and toughness which is what keeps you in a fight long. So I would advise as a beginner to stay close to the guards and fight side by side with them until you build more toughness and skills.

Now I would also try to get decent gear and weapons for your 5 members, and to do this is start by mining copper to sell to the shop, and you will have enough money to be able to get enough gear to be able to fight bandits.

Also when you get 10k cats joining the shinobi thieves,and they will sell you all the light gear you crave for cheap. You will be wearing light armour in the beginning,and you can either use a katana {great dps} or saber {defensive more for a tank}

GL,and please do not let your men suffer,be a leader ! Like the desert Fox was !

farmers in holy nation are fairly weak and can be good for training but avoid patrols and do not plan on staying in holy nation territory , weak groups can often have one to two members broken off that separate from them and provide an opportunity.

Plan to loose battles and have a second guy with med kits waiting to come in and rescue your dying members once the enemy has left the area. Having a dedicated rescue person is not a bad idea even once you get skilled as you may bite off more than you can handle sometimes.

If you train up your assassin and stealth you can often knock out the last guy in a formation of a group and fight them alone after they wake up.

another strategy is crossbows and have the enemy chase one guy why the rest light em up with arrows.

After you defeat an enemy you can bandage their wounds and fight them again once they get up.

High defense will allow you to fight groups that outnumber you. Train this by setting a guy to just block. This can pair well with the crossbow strategy. Once you have high defense you can handle being out numbered against enemies that are weaker.

You can also have groups chase 1 -2 guys while the rest of your group breaks off 1-2 enemies of a group to fight. Lots of micro management this way, but it can work

Speaking as somebody who just started playing a week or 2 ago, you won't be able to compete in the beginning. Kenshi seems to be all about a slow rise to power starting from nothing. You're in the "nothing" phase, so don't expect to be beating large mobs (or even small ones!) You might be able to take on a starving bandit 1 on 1 but anything more and you'll lose. You need to figure out how to deal with them without trying to beat them in a fair fight.

There are several options. Lure enemies to town guards, or other targets that will get them off your back. Hire mercenaries, or just avoid them altogether. But you get stronger by fighting (and losing!) Get to know your enemy, pick your battles, know when to run, keep a guy out of sight who can patch you up after you get robbed. Learn the importance of athletics and staying unencumbered.

It won't be too long before your stats and gear allow your team to hold their own, or at least easily get away from anything that wants what you have.

This is good advice, you can also buy a building like a storm house in the hub and then repair it. Build a research bench and do as much research as you can with the basic "books" you can purchase from vendors. Build training stations like melee, turrets, etc, and then train your character to about level 20. Build your strength by loading copper ore into a wooden backpack. It's best to use wooden backpacks because you can stack items in each slot and many other backpacks won't let you do that. The weight will quickly build your strength.

Toughness comes from fighting and as others have mentioned you should try to fight along side town guards for a while.

It takes a long time but if you keep at it your character will become very capable at combat. There are several youtube videos of people with characters at 100 on their stats and they can solo rooms full of NPC's and bosses.

I've had the game about a week, and this is what I'm doing....

1. Start in the Hub.
2. Recruit Hobbes right away.
3. Start a bar fight with the bullies sitting in the bar.
4. Sell their equipment (you don't want it, trust me).
5. Start mining copper.
6. Two females should appear in the bar, recruit them (3000 and 6000 cats).
7. Start running between the Hub and Squin to increase athletics.
8. If attacked by bandits, run to the bar in the Hub. Guards will help you make short work of them.
9. If any bandits have a bounty on them, carry them to Squin (you earn money, cred with the Shek, and increase strength of character carrying your prisoner).
10. Rinse and repeat.

Above all: DON'T BE IN A HURRY! Take your time and make sure your squad is a high enough level before venturing beyond the Hub - Squin corridor.

Yes, Ruka in Squin; Kang too. I'm keeping my squad racially pure.

Haha Haha, the game randomly decided to spawn me in clownsteady on my current play through, had to grind my athletics up and do a mad dash from settlement to settlement through the swamp to get to HN territory lol. Took me 4 tries, even with a mod that decreases the absolutely godlike attack range of the smaller spiders.

Enough time later, and you will flip back around to Skyrim logic of "Oh my god, PUNCH ME FASTER ALREADY" to grind your defensive skills and traits.

At least early 30-40+ strength is super easy with as little as two people in your squad. Both of you shove your packs full of mining results, then you carry your pal back to town and set them to follow a wandering NPC.

Tips for a rookie?

You started Base Building too early. Building your own base is more of a "Mid Game" activity.

You WILL advance in Skill. But, to do that, you need experience and that comes with doing the things related to the Skill. Fight enough and you'll get tougher, stronger, etc..

There are ways to Train skills/abilities. Look them up. There are plenty of guides out there for training Skills and Abilities.

There are also mods that will give you Training Equipment that isn't in the vanilla game to train up some specific skills.

Avoiding fights will not get you a lot of Experience. Only fighting fights you're sure to easily win won't do it either, after a certain point. Kenshi doesn't reward caution in terms of gaining experience. Caution is only ever rewarded by lives saved if you have to run...

When you have about 10 characters, with Combat related stats in their 30s, with decent armor and weapons, you're ready to build a Base if you want. Until then, though, do some Research with a Research Bench and get some defenses, learn how to craft items, learn farming and energy sources, etc.. You can also get surprisingly good at crafting Armor and Weapons while still in a Town, provided you can buy/find the raw materials and have bought housing to work in.

I've only played Rock Bottom style, even on my first playthrough, I don't use any exploits or cheese grind methods. I may have gotten some unintentional meta mixed in, but I just want to add my early game survival techniques.

Step 1: Scavenging - If you try to go into United Cities territory naked, you die. Follow around groups at a safe distance, eventually THEY WILL BE ATTACKED BY SKIMMERS and likely decimated. Pick up your goodies and get some clothes.

Step 2: Recruit - There's a few guaranteed companions in the UC, so this might not be applicable to other starts, but you essentially want to "Rush" to 5 companions ASAP, try to get at least one of them a field medic (First AID skill 40+) this can really help, especially if you're psychotic like me, playing on 2x Bleed-out speed, or an absolute lunatic playing on 4x Bleed out speed (Though I felt actually 4x made it easier, not harder, because NPCs would outright die immediately and be easier to loot)

Step 3: Training! - If you don't want to join the Shinobi Thieves, your next best bet is to find Starving Bandits. Have your medic hang back, get your ass beat, have medic haul them back to town and rest. Repeat for a few game days. Once your toughness goes up to around 10-15, odds start to shift in your favor, and if you can get standard quality armor, you can start to beat down starving bandits even 2 on 1

Step 4: Hippity Hoppity, you need some Property! - Harder in the UC, especially if you want to "Preserve the integrity of the population" by not deposing civilians by buying their houses (IE, only buy destroyed structures) You should try finding a house, ignore Small Shacks, try to get at least a Storm House, so you can get some basic production. The Storm House will be the first building that can fit a real research Bench. You can also then fit some of your own training equipment in there, if you've (For RP or laziness reasons) ignored the Shinobi Thieves. Continue recruiting whenever possible.

Step 5: Big Game Hunter - Once you've got some property, and ideally Bed Research, you can begin hunting more dangerous game. Stuff that will likely KO you fast, but also train you fast. with a safe Enclave to return to and rest (Without incuring Bed Rental fees which can quickly add up with a squad of 10 or so people) you can just keep having your squad fight things like skimmers and beak things, git rekt, heal and repeat. This will bring your squad well over the threshold to handle swarms of Low-grade bandits, like Rebel Farmers/Dust Bandits. It's at this point your options really swell, and thus, this is where I'll leave it.

Behavioral Note: Skimmers only consume DEAD prey, they are safe (if you don't bleed out) to be KO'd by. Beak Things consume LIVE (KO, Crippled, etc) Prey, so have an exit strategy.

Beak Things are almost impossible to outrun, but easy to divert away with Micro. One person can hold a Beak thing Indefinitely by timing (Not even particularly carefully) your movement. Eventually you can just lead the Beak Thing to town and have it get slaughtered. Free Meat!
