I actually disagree with Kalk a bit. I think they're more useful if you don't have a base yet. They extend your range dramatically. And if you run across like a herd of critters to kill, all that meat can be saved.
That's how I got all of my money in my current game. I got by with just 3 thief back packs. And it's more lucrative to hit the general store for the robotic repair kits. They sell better and weigh far less as well as take up less room.
Play the game as you see fit, then on replay, play it differently.
Once you are out of the initial struggle, and food is not an issue anymore. Gives you some inventory space either when exploring ancient places, or just looting bands of aggroers ; they can also enter and decide the fight when desperately outnumbered.
A well trained wild bull can deliver a surprising amount of damage, especially against packed enemies. Even late game, in the ashlands when that unexpected patrol aggroes, one well trained bull can be your lifeline.
Also provides you with 'something to do' if you're running into a bit of 'what now!?' as you need to go hunting regularily
Yes, packbeasts are great bags and midgame fighters.
I just don't like wasting actual food on the pack beasts and as pretty much everything that drops foul meat which is animal food also drops normal meat which is used for a bunch of prepared food recipes, welp :D
