Kenshi

Do I have to consult a wiki to enjoy this?
Recent reviews comparing this to Ultima Online really got me interested. I scrapped by as a sort of scavenger in that game: looting battlefields, fletching arrows, trying not to get pk'ed over & over on the main roads. Like a vagrant really. Some of my fondest gaming memories.

However, the idea of constantly alt-tabbing to consult a wiki drains a lot of my enthusiasm. I get (and like) it not holding my hand tutorializing everything...but can it be figured out on your own at all? Or is online reference mandatory or I won't enjoy the game?

no, this is nothing like Ultima Online

I’ve read nothing, picked the start where you start as a slave, and have been figuring it out as I go. A bit rough at the start, but an amazing game once you start breaking through and learning what you’re doing.

I have a lot of time in this game and have never even looked at the wiki but on the flip side I do enjoy watching people play the game on YouTube and twitch. So all in all no I don’t believe you need to consult the wiki but information all ways helps.

Kenshi does zero hand holding but does offer some clues.

Opening your character screen, C, and mousing over the stats will tell you a lot about them. Your first few deaths will give you a good idea on how to play and what you can deal with. Opening the build menu will show you the basics of settlement building, if you decide to do so. The loading screen hints are even pretty helpful.

My biggest suggestion is to do, and let things happen. Yeah, you'll die, get your legs eaten by fogmen, be taken as a slave, have your body torn apart by shredder machines, get melted by acid rain and be burned to death by giant sky lasers, but each.is a valuable learning experience and you'll miss out by playing off a wiki or constantly reloading saves.

Sweet thanks for the replies!

Cool I'm glad the consensus seems to be "wiki not needed." Game sounds incredible.

I played UO for years and never thought of checking external sources to get info, but that were diferent times ;D God i feel old just thinking about this.

Anyway, no, you don't have to consult wiki/guides/youtube/this forum/whatever. It may help though. Or spoil the fun. Like with any other game.

Yeah. My UO comment & wiki question were two unrelated thoughts really. I think I confused people by pairing them!

I agree! There WEREN'T any wikis back in the UO wild west!

I remember making most of my cash in UO south of Moonglow, hunting Hinds. Once I had about 10,000 gold I felt secure enough to go anywhere, and boy did I!

Very few games captured me in the same way UO did and I sorely miss it. Sadly I simply cant get into that game nowadays.

This game is awesome and though it isn't like UO, it does have some of the same survival workings.

You don't have to consult a wiki, and even if you did I wouldn't bother because the wiki is an absolute wreck lol.

I.E the pages about turrets, each link about each subtype of turret, all link to the same page explaining what a turret is and discussing how they only exist in the game files and aren't implemented, lol. To clarify the page has multiple links that all link to. the. page. you. are. currently. viewing.

What a mess.

But no, you don't have to consult a wiki. Asking for help on the forums and watching a few videos of people playing the game should be enough to give you a firm grasp on its various concepts. You teach yourself your own playstyle and start techniques.

As an added note:

You can buy or find maps or clues to locations on the map so you'll end up finding about most of the interesting spots about that, and the rest you can discover as you wander around. Some of the places are amazing and looking into the wiki can ruin them for you.

Many things in Kenshi kenshi challenge "RPG-Logic". Without giving any spoilers I'll suggest you try different combinations of weapons, gear, and styles on each character.

If you like that sort of gameplay you should try the slave start. It is brutal, but fun in that way.

I got very far into the game with only looking at a wiki once. So no it is not a minecraft esk wiki heavy game.

Whoever compared this to UO needs to have their head examined.
