you get building materials by makeing a stone mine and then turning the raw stone in to building materials

You can also buy building materials at certain shops as well. The cheapest way is to produce it yourself.

(edit) If you have a character that's good at prospecting you can easily find the best spots to to build a stone quarry to max stone production.
