How does food storage work?

I have my little shack and i have built myself a food storage box. it seems my food thats automatically in my backpack gets put into this food storage box when i go to my base. also i cooked food outside and that also gets deposited directly to the storage box? am i missing something? do my two fellas automatically consume from this box when im "home"? thanks!

characters will auto drop into specialized containers when they have "jobs" on.

yes your characters will get food from it when they are hungry.

This is happening even with jobs turned off or no jobs at all. Also my guys are auto returning to a nearby campfire to cook uncooked meat in their pack, no matter what i do or even in my own base area they run to a far away campfire. whats up with this behavior? any ideas ?:) thanks@

You have the ditch resources option turned on.

Also, it seems you have "Shift-Clicked" the campfire so it is now a Job for those people. They will automatically do their job if they can, even to the point of abandoning a guard post or armed incursion!

Look in the lower right with that one person selected and see if any jobs are assigned.

If you build food storage, make sure any rations you had in your away teams inventory hasn't been automatically stashed in the barrel too. There's nothing more annoying than running halfway across the map then noticing your squad is starving because they've stored their rations in the outpost barrel automatically..

..the same applies to the Medicrate for splint and medical storage, and Robotics chests for your Skeletons. Don't get caught out in the field with no food or medical supplies, lol. It's not fun having to limp back to base at 5mph.

Idle characters will dump resourses into boxes by default. Such as food, ore, building material, ext. And yes when they get hungry they grab from set food box for nom noms.
