Kenshi
best way to acquire food in beginning
hi all, love this game, incredible scope....new and obvi thousands of questions, but whats the best way to start getting food? im at the hub and so far only felt comfortable mining close by and then selling to the bar but the food prices are enormous so whats a good way to start branching out? so new and overwhelmed in the best way, starting small...
thanks!

Travel north east a bit into the Holy nations (That green river valley) if you are a male green/scorchlander. Find all those nasty river raptors. Aggro them, kite them to town guards. Loot the hides, sell for massive profits. Repeat.

Hi!

If you're at the Hub, the best thing is really to just purchase dried meat, rice or Gouchu. All other food options are exceedingly expensive for their nutritional value.

Just north of Hub there's a small bar (that might secretly be something else, but there's still a bartender) if you run out of food at the Hub bar.

This early in the game you'll likely want to avoid farming until you have a more established group, so the other option would be hunting for the occasional bonedog.

or do the same with bone dogs and then just cook up their meat. you just need to build a few camp fires outside of town to keep yourself fed early on.

thanks!! as a side note....why cant i stack items in my inventory??

Theft is pretty easy. Raise your Thievery by robbing items left in the open like cups and plates, until its reasonable. Then find any bar such as the ones in Squin, and check the barrels right in the door where nobody ever looks. Sometimes you can find several rations and foodcubes in them. Pain to steal all of it without getting rumbled, but it can be worth it.

Otherwise, do low end money making like mining copper or luring Dust Bandits etc towards towns so the guards clean them up, then loot their corpses and sell it to the local store, until you can afford enough food to travel for a while without starving to death.

Remember tha Gohan and Ration Packs are the most efficient when considering how long they last and how much hunger they provide for the value. Dried meat looks tempting, but they're literally a morsel if little else, and definitely a waste of inventory space - but if you find yourself with a bunch of raw meat, don't hesitate to throw down a free camp fire and cook it all.

You can also hunt down Old Empire Supply Posts, they're usually not very well defended, with few to none small Spider Bots, but contain a good amount of supplies including a unique ration pack that only spawns there - they also usually contain beds for healing after any scuffles. You can often find supplies to keep even a full squad going for a while at least, along with a chance at high grade weapons and armour. Also, plenty of building materials.

You can stack items in certain backpacks only. Not all backpacks can stack items, but they all have slightly different trade offs.

a note about stealing: if you get caught stealing the shop owner will not sell to you anymore. don't steal from anyone you may want to buy/sell with in the future.

Will not sell to any one in your faction, to elaborate a bit further. Not just the character that was caught stealing.

Always buy dried meat at the start, or raw meat if you find it. You will just need to cook it if you arent a hiver or scorchlander.

Luring beak things to hiver villages in Vain is extremely dangerous but can be very profitable.

A risky but good way to get hides for money early on is to go to the nearby hive village just west of hub. They are in an endless battle with wild life there. gutters and gorillos lots of hides , but avoid them while you do it or you will die. you can also steal from the hive and sell to hub.

thank you for great advice! Now how the eff do i cook my questionable meat at the campfire i build?? wont let me :(
Pwnicus Dec 7, 2018 @ 6:36pm
try holding down right mouse on the campfire and select "inventory" I think it is, that should open up a window where you can drop raw meat into the left box, and it'll cook and become edible meat for everyone, not just scorchlanders / hivers
bebopdrums2424 Dec 7, 2018 @ 6:43pm
hehehe ya theres that too....its not letting me put "foul raw meat", not sure if its ALL foul cuz wasteland or that foul is actually bad and not edible
