Later on when you're homesteading and set up properly and producing your own building materials from stone, with a hauling job set up to haul that to storage containers etc, things will get a little easier.
Shift clicking a structure for building will add the "Engineering" job to that character, and they will automatically fetch resources needed from the various specific storage containers (not general storage) without any of the fiddling and inventory woes you might have to deal with, assuming they have the space.
Yes though as others have pointed out, backpacks. They do different things, with different pros and cons, but for travelling and moving resources around, the Merchant / Trader backpack is the best, with most stack potential and room etc. Give your non-combatant laborers those to ease their burdens.
