As long as you don't mind running away from some of the earlier raids you can wait on the walls until you have enough infrastructure to start funding them.
When you do make it to walls I would recommend a setup kinda like this.

It forces the enemies to expose themselves to two rows of turrets which will help you drop many if not all of them before the gate gets breached.
You'll also want at the very least 10 wheatstraw and Greenfruit to set up seeder farms so you can make a few more of them, or upgrade your main ones as you learn how.
I always just start off by finding a spot where I can get access to water, iron and stone using Prospecting. Having around 20k Cats also makes it easier if your team can't fight since you can hire some Mercenaries to stand around and beat the crap out low level threats.
Minings the first task so I can produce Building Materials and Iron Plates without running back to town often.
The safest place to build is in the Holy Nation lands so long as you can afford the taxes, building out in the UC is a horrible idea because you're going to get hit for taxes first by the United Cities, then the frigging Free Traders will come along demanding protection money.
Cactuses turn into Rum which creates a pretty hefty profit. I usually just make Vegetables + Wheat to turn into Food Cubes but that's a recipe that'll take awhile to learn. At least you can just cook the vegetables and stockpile Flour until you're ready for it.
How do you make iron plates yourself without setting base in the first place? I bought the Longhouse in The Hub thinking I can produce my own building stuff, but turns out the Iron Furnace is an outdoor-only structure. So I'm confused how to be able to make iron plates yourself before setting up the base.
Unless you mean the research of it and buy the plates off NPC of course.
Outpost buildings are a waste of time. Station houses are great. Small wind generators are great and can go on flat building roofs.
And buying a house somewhere you can get plate components and churning out heart protectors while you research can be amazing money.
And beware of AI loops with continual orders.
I suggest getting one of the mods or making one which increases how much storage goes in one container. Because you can't just give orders to take item to nearest storage. You have to give it for each storage which creates carrying loops.
