Pack Beast, Pack Bull or Domesticated Bull
Which of these three do you prefer to use and why? I'm new to this game and am trying to see how useful these guys are. It'd be good to have a strong companion that can also carry a lot of stuff.

Bull is slower, does more damage.
Pack Beast is faster, less damage.

The damage levels are all high, just bull is higher. They lack armor, so more then 1 big fight and they'll be limping. So they are tanky in terms of hp only.

Compared to high end heavy armor they aren't tanky at all. Everything is relative.

Bull is still fairly fast. Carry wieght isn't an issue for either.

Pack beast has 1 advantage that is also a disadvantage. The light on it's bags allow work in darkness without negative, but it makes sneaking nearly impossible. Normally enemies have low detection distance at night, that light greatly increases it making avoiding fights hard.

Seems a bull might be the way to go for me, thanks for your input

Depends what you're wanting to do with it.

I mostly just use my pack animal as a way to ferry materials around my base with an occasional trade run to town.

Animals aren't tanky in any way. Even if you use your animal to fight just to raise its toughness over time, it will still get wrecked by the occasional skimmer or bandit group if alone.

Bone Dogs are better for attack and defense, but only in a group. But again, think of them only as a glass cannon or a thing to sit at your gate to raise alarms when something hostile approaches.

There's a mod for that :)

A mod for what? Controlling the light on it's bags?

It's a link to the mod. A backpack without lantern you can buy for your packbeasts.

Don't make the mistake of buying any bull except for the Wild Bulls you can buy at the nomads.

The domesticated bull/pack bull(just a domesticated one that comes with backpack) will forever remain super slow regardless of how much you train their athletics. Wild Bull has in general higher stats and a really nice charge attack, can be quite fast once you train their athletics, even faster than bone dogs.

Seriously, the domesticated ones are so bad, I'm thinking about killing the one I have for meat or something because it's slowness, even at athletics 60+ is annoying me to no end. I wish I could just sell it :horsearmor:

Thanks for the tip

Domesticated bulls have no horns. That's like declawing a cat.

I do not think this is true at all. I've purchased several domesticated bulls. They take a long time to mature (so do wild bulls) 40 days to become adult. They all have the same charge attack. Once it became elder, my domesticated bull was doing 100+ damage to enemies. I also do not use mods.

You can just pick up a fully loaded bull and still sprint pretty fast, it's no big deal how fast it is. I
just use my domesticated bull as a super backback on adventures.

^ Ehhhhhhh..... that works, but it feels so wrong. Also the animal ragdolls are hilariusly broken XD

I agree. I don't really like doing it , just the bulls are so damn slow. If there's a mod to either make animals heavier or speed bulls up i'd be super happy.

Animals gain skill just like normal NPCs. The bull's athletics will go up over time. My bull runs as fast as my other characters after a few days.
