Kiting simulator?
All the YouTube series I've watched on this game seem to involve copious ammounts of kiting. Is this the reality or are there better more enjoyable ways of progressing?

The only reason I kite is because my Hives won't survive an BeakThing with their Crossbows, there are thousands way of getting stronger... like kidnap a bandit and train with him or my favourite just travel the world and challenge everyone

I have never used kiting, or even thought about it really. Progressing is pretty fast as long as you understand that the fastest way to get stronger is to lose fights against stronger enemies.

Kiting is only something I'd consider to be STRONGLY reccomended is if you go solo or are into some deep ♥♥♥♥. Other methods are def worthwhile, kiting is just one of the less messy ways

this game has many better and more enjoyable ways to play than kiting.
I've become a slave to raise skills and just to get fed.

I've ran up to where one major faction was fighting another and set bodyguard (thats how i never accadentaly attack that team) to one guy on the team i wanted to join. fighting wars in that whole playthrew.

I've ran from every fight as a quick on his feet thief.

knowing the map helps

on one playthrew i started as a robot and ran for burn's house... recruted him - got a free robot repair bed. attacking all living things. get beat down and if you live you can run back to the bed.

so many ways to play. this is my favorite sandbox game.
see how long you can keep beep alive without letting him join the team.

So far the most kiting I've done is for Security Spiders while using Eagle's Crosses, which otherwise are just annoying with the amount of damage they dish out that inevitably leads to a lot of downtime later.

Rest of the time, it's messy melee.

I don’t kite. Kiting is a great way to not get toughness exp.

Kiting....... I'm more of a wild charge in single file line type of player. Knights don't use bows.....

Kiting is a great strategy against a lot of enemies. It's rarely required. Once you understand the game a bit, you can definitely level your melee abilities just fine. As for enjoyable, that's up to you. If you want to fight tactically, mixed formations can be fun. You can also just run a good squad of Shek with heavy weapons and armors and be a brute force barbarian. There are lots of viable combat strategies. The most important thing is picking smart fights.

The way I used to fight back on the old map, was practically moving my guy at the last moment to dodge an attack, it may not be kiting but it's what I used to do, it was very hacky and glad that you cannot do that anymore.

Kiting for me is only used for my guy with a crossbow, only way to train him up is to shoot and hit people and he cannot do that when they have a sword to his head. For everything else I just let my guys go at it, it is afterall the best way train up their skill in combat/toughness/weapon expertise.

None of my characters use crossbows, so kiting doesn't work so well. I do micromanage some of the harder fights though, but thats rare, usually only when I'm extremely outnumbered.

The term comes from MMOs. In MMOs its usually about abusing the AI and staying mobile to keep out of danger, its how people can solo whats supposed to be group content, world bosses and such (I do it all the time online).

Basically using hit and run tactics to stay out of danger as much as possible.

The easiest way to kite your way to victory in Kenshi is to give a hiver masterwork running legs, give them a high end crossbow and a couple packs full of bolts, snipe and run, nothing can touch you. I personally find it to be a boring way to play Kenshi, but some people enjoy it.

In Kenshi, I move units around strategically in large fights, but alot of the time if theres no threat I'll just sit back and enjoy the show as my guys hack everything to pieces. Theres more limbs flying around when you're in melee after all.

I never kite. Crossbows are realtively new, and it's safe if you kite. A good youtuber wouldn't do that because it's not fun to watch. It's up to you if you do it or not.
I use Xbows alongside my melee guys, my medic have them. They are support. More fun that way if you ask me.

Why would you want to kite in a game that requires you to get beat up in order to build up defensive skills? You're just turning yourself into a glass cannon that can never take a hit.

^This^

I wouldn't say it was strongly recommended but it can save your game in a sticky situation if you're running solo or you have 1 guy left with all others in critical or dying level.

I prefer to run away instead lol ;o)

Meh on kiting, as others have mentioned, better to take the beatings and improve the toughness, you will need it later.

On the issue of crossbows, yes, you'll need those later, too.
Crossbows are one of the few ways to overcome heavy armor since they cranked up armor protection and weapons with no armor penetration and/or a penalty stink at certain points in the game.
Tried fighting HN inquisitors with conventional weapons later? Their armor is probably way better than it should be, and the only way to reasonably overcome that is crossbows shooting heavy bolts. Funny how the inquisitors can shred my guys wearing heavy armor, but they take very little in return, even being hit with edge/meitou weapons....
Almost as bad on those big iron spider fights, but at least the hackers with the bonus vs robots helps with that.

Anyway, yeah, not much need for kiting in this game and it is actively counter-productive most of the time.
