Kenshi
A bit confused with armor types
Hey guys! Here is a small comparison on a screen below. It looks like Ninja rags have better resistance and coverage than Empire samurai armour, even more - it doesnt have debuffs, and much lighter. So is there any point in wearing heavy armor? Or armor material (leather, chainmail, Metal Plate) also matters?

For me I just divide it into what they are which are Light armor class, Medium armor class and Heavy armor class.

Armor that are from the Light armor class I tend to use on characters with high dexterity and fast hitting weapons or even using crossbows as their primary.

Armor from Medium and Heavy class I alternate depending on what i'm going to fight like taking on a city where my squad will be wearing heavy armor to sustain long enough against crossbows, turrents and the defenders. Whereas hunting wildlife I use medium armor to take enough damage while still being able to move at speeds i'm comfortable in.

If you are going to compare at least compare them within similar tier like High Grade to High Grade.

Of course the High Grade Ninja Rags would be better when the rest of the heavier armor you are showing are from Shoddy Grade to Standard Grade.

When at the same tier, the heavier armor types will technically "win" but would usually come with some form of penalties such as combat speed, combat skill bonus and etc.

Yeah, found Standart grade Ninja rugs, they have 16% and 24% for blunt and cut resistance. Not sure though if that difference really worth lower athletics and combat speed. So material used in armor doesnt matter?

Thanks a lot, usefull info there. I decided to stick to light armor for now, to train weapon skills and dexterity with toughness faster.

generally heavier armors have less stun coversion, but also less coverage.

Light have good coverage, but high stun. (you'll resist a ton of direct damage but a lot of it will get converted to stun-damage)

Medium is kind of in the middle between coverage and low stun conversion.

Heavy has good resistances and little to no stun conversion but weak spots, since the full value is only where the armored plates are, but still has weak spots between them you'll have to cover with other armors.

Note that those ninja rags have 100% stun conversion so won't actually prevent any of the damage coming in as cut - the cut damage they block will all be converted to blunt damage.

In contrast, the Samurai armour only has 10% conversion so ~ 33% of cut damage will be stopped completely and just ~4% will go through as blunt. This makes the samurai armour much stronger against weapons with majority cut damage like katanas, but vulnerable to mainly blunt weapons like clubs (which is roughly accurate to real life).

The Visored Helmet is quite weak, to be honest - it should probably have higher coverage and/or better resists for the penalties it gives you. The Police Helmet is widely considered the best heavy helm because it has 100% coverage, high resists, low stun conversion and only a -1 penalty to combat skills.

Yep, without question the best helmet presently in game...

Unless you're using bows, as it has a -10 perception penalty, in which case the hooded armored faceplate (don't recall exactly what it's called) is the best option if you want heavier armour, or the Ashlander's Hat and Goggles is the best for bow users overal IMO, with it's reasonable armour and +4 perception...

Thanks a lot for advices and explanations guys, not it's all clear. I did read about stun on link provided by SBasbvg but somehow got it wrong, duh. I guess a need to rethink my squads gear now :D

Dunno about merc being better than samurai since samurai blocks all damage, though only has 75% coverage, while merc armour allows 20% through (IIRC) with 80-90% coverage...

Its kinda a toss up IMO, slightly better coverage or slightly better damage reduction...

Definitely agree about the boots though, the long boots are certainly better...

The longsword is now buried, and the mercenary armor is now the best in the game,
I do not like the new balance in many ways, there is no modification to return it?

Rebalanced stats already exist on the experimental version of the game , which in the future will be on stable version

Strange, I thought I was running the experimental build but have had no updates for at least the past few days... Will give it another look when home from work...

And does heavy armour now penalise crossbow use?

Hence me asking to confirm that stat...

Merc Leather with chainmail was always a great mobility option, but it just got better again...

Unless chainmail also penalises crossbows?
