Most cost efficient food?
I have been eating dried meat as its cheap, but was wondering if I bought more expensive food would it last longer? Is there any point eating the expensive food?

not really.. dried meat is the most cost effective afaik.. it also takes up less space than some of the fancier ones.. if you want maximum nutrition go for the very expensive ration pack..

Gohan is my choice - excellent cost/nutrition ratio and relatively easy to craft (if you fancy farming/cooking). Also vegan-friendly lol. And looks good! Rice and vegetables is also good for your health :P

Square cubes are my best friend and stock up on them at every bar I go to. Once you loot more expensive things and can afford for every team member, it lasts longer

Good mod idea, perhaps give certain foods stat bonuses.

Too many carbs, you're giving everyone diabetes.

lol this thread.. in kenshi either you die horribly or you become unstoppable supersoldiers but if there were nutrition / thirst / diseases like in Cataclysm:DDA we would be so screwed..

The higher food does last longer, because it has higher nutrition ('Nu" in-game). Dried Meat is 15 Nu....so if a character eats at 250, then Hunger level will rise to 265 before it starts dropping again. But if he/she eats a 50-nu Meatwrap, then it will rise all the way to 300 (and so obviously takes a lot longer to rise and then go all the way back down).

Note that food items with higher than 50nu are good for multiple meals...they won't eat it all at once. A 125-nu Ration Pack, for example, might last several days (it's also, however, extremely expensive and non-vanilla-craftable...I think there's mods for that though).

Space & weight may or may not be significant consideration depending on situation. Example: Cooked vegetable offers 20nu at weight 1kg, but takes up a 3x3 block in inventory. Dried fish gives that same 20nu at 1kg...but in a 1x3 footprint, only a third of the space. That may be meaningless if hanging out in town or own base doing crafting jobs, laboring, etc. But not so meaningless if outfitting for a long ruin-looting expedition in the wilds. A weight example: 20-nu Chewsticks are only 0.5kg; at 40nu per kg, by far the most weight-efficient of the simpler lower-tier foods.

Obtw somewhat food-management related: Sleeping isn't just for healing injuries faster; it also carries a 0.33x hunger rate. So if food conservation is a concern and you happen to have a character who might be idle for several hours or more, plop 'em in bed. Similarly, sitting down carries a hunger-reduction modifier as well (I forget the exact number)...so worthwhile to enable "Sit when Idle" in AI tab and sprinkle a few stools around in your buildings. And in bars, sitting is free while beds cost money.

More than I initially intended to type; hope all that helps to answer your question.

What's the reasoning/logic behing Ration Packs not being craftable? Or am I missing this crucial end game component?
nex Aug 23, 2018 @ 8:57am
yeah that always bugged me too.. they even list the components.. feels wrong as we can make anything else.. if a dev reads this i want that in vanilla not with mods.. it should be part of the game imo..

Just out of curiosity,is there a technical reason for not implementing rations crafting in vanilla?
I don't know the numbers but i am interested in the subject:-)

I am partial to chew sticks to begin with then move on to cubes. I do use the mod to craft ration packs as well. A little off topic but why wouldn't you use the mod? It's not as if you get them easily or in a cheaty way. Mods are the reason I've kept with this game for so many hours.

Gohan is the most cost efficient food.

For 75 Nu and on average around 300-400c.

To put that into perspective, another food with 75 Nu would be Foodcube, which often costs more than 800 or 900c. Over double the price for the same amount of nutritions.

The only downside with Gohan is its size, taking 3x3 inventory space per unit.

If money is not an issue, and you just want to pack as much food as possible, then Ration Packs is the choice of food to take with you, as its size is only 2x2, while packing a whopping 125 Nu. They are expensive, but having the highest nutrition value per unit than any other food, their cost per nutrition is not too bad.

If you buy Food, your doing it wrong, because you only consider nutrition has value... The way you get food also has value:
Dried meat is good, because to get meat, you fight animals and that make you stronger (Turtle Swamp, in the plateau above Clownsteady should be accessible to beginner - just avoid the swamp to get there!).
You should also consider stealing food to gain a few thievery/sneak skill point. Very easy even in the beginning: Temples in Holy Nation are empty in the night. Also aim for buildings that have barrels on the roof and no guards!

Dustwich baby!
Alpharius138 Aug 23, 2018 @ 3:12pm
I agree with dustwich as well IF your living in the desert, which I don't usally build an outpost in. Gohan back up with the large groups of turtle herds found in the swamps, keeps food at a decent cost. Also I believe food effects Blood production in game I experimented with a day one Character And kept him fed for a week. Even with the combat and Arm lose I was feeding him so healthy stuff IE Meatwraps and Survival rations and his blood went up from 90 to 120 I think so eating gives you more blood I found.
