Strength/lock picking by constantly unlocking your cage/shackles, store the shackles in your inventory(at least four or five should be good).
Keep your characters on the sprint setting to improve Athletics the most. every night escape your cage/pole and sneak around and steal whatever food is available for you and your slave buddy.
and get in some assassin training by "assassinating" the guards it won't do anything, but you'll gain some skill for each "successful" attempt.
This last bit is mostly luck because my two characters were crossing paths when i attempted this. with a high athletics skill 31< Unlock your shackles, drop everything that isn't food. and run for the gate directly to the back of the giant statue North North western side. there will be guards of course.
But if you can serpentine your characters right before they get hit by an attack the attack will miss and just keep running. i got my two chicks out of the final gate easily that way. one of them did get shish kabobed by a harpoon and i thought it was all over (i just couldn't leave my second behind) they captured them both and patched them both up but thankfully one of the guards that remained get a bug up his butt and stood there holding the second character while the first i made stand there waiting. after a bit he dropped the second character and just..ran away. :/
i stood there confused as to what was happening for a second and then i finally picked up my second and just hoofed it in the opposite direction.
When you start the game with this start you will automatically discover a Lone shack location. This is where i headed, it was a strait shot to it (this is why the gate right behind the giant statue is the best gate to try and escape from. this lone shack is in fact a slave safe house. there's food and some clothing and weapons for you hear and some beds and matts in case your guys are injured. after this your next stop should be the Hub, naturally.
1. Spend as much free time as possible picking locks. At night pick the lock on your cage, after you escape go back into your cage, pick the lock again, and so on.
2. During the day, when one of your slaves is in a chain gang mining at a rock with a few other slaves you don't control, pick the locks on their shackles. Do this until you have 2 or 3 slaves free. They should follow you.
3. Make a run for the gate. The guards can't stop all of you, and at least some of the NPC slaves running away with you will try to fist fight the guards. This will distract them so they won't chase you. It's even better if you're a scorchlander or a hiver, because then you're race will make you faster.
From here you can choose to run north or south. South is more Holy Nation settlements, bandits, and the like. North is a safehouse the Flostan Ninjas set up to aid runaway slaves like you. Further north is the Flostan Ninja village; if one of your slaves is a girl or a non-human you can seek refuge, but if your whole party is human men you can still talk your way past by either taking a vow on Okran you aren't a spy or saying "Okran is not my God!". I don't know why human men who escaped slavery can't tell the Ninjas that, but in my story I just pretended the guy who was questioned was too prideful to admit it.
point is, best way to escape on your first week that I found? go out to work on that mining node outside of the gate, sneak behind the rock so no one sees you, and wait until night fall... and just leave through the valley.
keep in mind the mountain path is a bit if a maze and you'll probably be starving or worse. so before leaving, eat some bread or something - should last you at least until you're able to sneak past the city to the east.
(sorry, forgot the city's name xD)
