It was tough.
But given I started with the 5 nobodies game start, I had 5 characters + Hobbs for free because starting location is The Hub = 6 characters off the bat.
I also play with 3x attack slot mod. This means that if I outnumber the enemy, it becomes expotentially easier to win the fight, while if I get outnumbered it gets expotentially harder to win the fight.
Sure, in the beginning it's tough, your attacks deal a measely 2 damage per hit, while you also suffer damage if you hit metal.
My first task was to mine iron and copper to gain some strength and money, and spent the money conservitevely on food, trying to save 10k to join the Thieves guild.
That gave me a safe heaven to sleep my injuries off.
Occasionally a few hungry bandits would come by. If it were just 1-3 of them, I'd swarm them and beat them (remember the 3x attack slot mod), while it it were more I'd consider running for my life.
Soon I got bored of that, so I decided to travel South to the Shek Kingdom to try and find Martial Artist Bindings for my crew. By this time I hadn't really upped my stats all that much, probably it was around 10 STR and 3-5 unarmed. Bad decision.
I came across a single mature Bonewolf, and despite the advantage in numbers, every punch my crew threw at it would only deal 2 or 3 damage. You can imagine how that battle went.
Luckily enough, though, it didn't eat my crew and it just walked away, which allowed me to save my crew as soon as one of them regained consiousness.
I was still pretty near to the Hub, so at crawling speed I made my way to the Thieves Guild and slept them injuries away, and then back to traveling South. There I recruited Ruka, a free Shek recruit, got them a few Bindings because they weren't as easy to get there as I had hoped and traveled back to the Hub with my crew of now 7 weak, unarmed men and women. And, of course, a new plan.
Now I have decided to adopt a new strategy, a more fun one, more excitement.
That is I traveled a bit to the North of Hub, where the isolated bar is with the Thieve Trades? I don't remember the exact name of their faction. Anyway, they like to beat Dust and Hungry Bandits.
So I'd hang near there, sending one person to scout around and lead any bandits he finds to the bar. Thanks to the bar guards, the battles were easy, and slowly but steadily my stats would grow. Try doing this while encumbered to increase your STR as well.
As my stats grew, I would start facing Hungry Bandits by myself, preferably groups no larger than mine (again mostly because of the mod).
When my unarmed stats were starting to be to 15-20, I decided to head towards Stormgap Coast. That is East of The Hub, but the journey was not so simple due to The Black Desert, Gray Desert and Venge. So I had to travel North through the Deadlands and Skimsands (read: Holy Nation and Skimmer-infested lands, note that one of my characters is a Skeleton).
Sure I visited Heng on the way to get them some Gi pants.
Why go through all that trouble?
Because Grass Pirates roam there, and they have Martial Artist Bindings and Sleevelss Dustcoats. That is +2 and +4 for a total of +6 to unarmed combat. +2 from the Gi Pants I was reaching +8 unarmed combat just from gear.
By now I had recruited a few more characters, and I was on a mission to find better grade Sleeveless Dustcoats, and to continue growing stronger. I achieved both of those.
It has been a long journey, and yet the struggle continues.
Going for a unramed-only squad is not an easy path.
But let your Iron Will train your Iron Fist.
