Purpose of Green Glass in Desert
So, I'm certain I'm not the only one finding odd slabshards of what looks like shiny, green, glass or stone in the northern and central desert areas of the game... I would understand their purpose if there were random lightning bolts in the desert too, as that's how glass is sometimes formed in anchint egypt, but otherwise I have no clue as to how they got there nor the random shard's glass purpose. I"m tempted to make a map and mark all the spots I'm finding them, just to see if there's something to be found...

So far I've found three total, in my northern trek from Henge.

Pic of most recent one found:

There are several ways to get this sort of glass.

Impact Glass - Forms as molten sand cools after a meterite impact in the desert. The glass you mention the Egyptians using is from a meteroite impact 26 million years ago in what is now Libya.

Trinitite (USA)/Kharitonchik (Russia) - Glass (often green) formed from sand (or some other silica rich material) after an atmospheric nuclear detonation.

Fulgurite - Glass formed from sand struck by lighting. Tends to be spidery, almost like tree roots.

Given the size of the glass shards in Kenshi as well as what little we do know about the history of the planet, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume the glass formed as a result of the use of nuclear, or similarly energetic weapons (i.e. orbital bombardment via mass drivers), some time during/after the "War of Behemoths" and fall of the First Empire.

@ Darth..apart the thanks for the uber interesting answer, those green pieces of glass are actually found where one of the laser shooting machines crashed...maybe those rays of light formed them.
Having said that I wished there was a use for them in game:-(

Maybe it's just beer bottle remnant.

I mean, look at it that way, if our civilization was to be extinct tomorrow, in a thousand year the most common artifacts would be glass bottles. Plastic last decades/centuries at most, metal rust, wood rot, building crumble to dust, but glass last thousands of years.
Look at the Roman and Greek, the most common relic, by a large margin, are pottery remnant. To the point they hold no archelogical value anymore, and they can be trashed without remorse. With the exception of high quality/unique ones.

Well, the chunks are a bit large to be from a beer bottle. It would be funny to discover that the behemoths used really huge bottles...
