Pretty good base location.
Something I see come up commonly is the question of good base locations. Well I think i've found a pretty decent one. It takes a bit of higher level research to get the most out of it, plus having characters with 30+ combat stats will greatly help deal with the spawns in the area (i.e. slaver raids, fishmen parties, band of bones, bonewolfs, beak ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and whoever else you've pissed off.) Still if you can manage it, It ends up being pretty damn good, and, being so close to the map cut off, once the rest opens up, it'll serve as a good pathway into the new areas. Stats are : Water (60% MAX in certain areas) Fertility (100% for arid, no/go for green or swamp without hyrdoponics.), Wind is usually above 10k/m but there are slow days, and TONS of copper and iron nodes around (especially useful if you download the Copper Mine mod.)

For those who can't see the location too well in the screenshots, it's in the High Boneyards directly east of the slaver camp in the hills, where the rock spires rise.

Nice settlement, good job. I never settle that south but your shot inspire me to do so and raid those slavemongers

Yea I had some hesitation in going so far south, as my first base had been on the hill just north of Squin, but I didn't care for the fact of how close I was to other major settlements. I spent probably 70 in game days taking a 'recon' squad of four or five going literally everywhere on the map surveying places that were a decent distance for trading and seclusion, had acceptable resources to take care of 20+ people, and that I found looked nice and outposty. It's actually not too hard of an area if you can deal with the band of bones and occasional bonewolf herd, massive coastal raids and the odd beak thing spawning in or very close to your base.

In-Game Biome Map by Shidian. After using it, can't see playing it without it, or atleast something very similar.

Out of curiosuty, why is it bad to build nearby a major settlement? I haven't built my outpost yet and looking for pro's/cons. Thx in advanceNice looking base man.

I love this spot. It's outside of territory zones, it's extremely quiet aside from a couple Beak Things every now and then, and most of the time raids don't even make it to your base alive if you cut off the north side with the impassable hill above the iron rocks. Stone isn't good but great everything else. Wind stays a constant 57%, sometimes going to 50% but never lower. Don't build too far into the water off the west coast though or you'll be in a different zone with unpredictable wind.

Squeetch it's not really bad, no matter where you build if you are inside of a territory zone (google that) you'll get either:
Holy Nation prayer day
Shek demanding food tribute
United Cities demanding taxes

And it probably helps to avoid getting attacked by local bandits to that area in general, when I made a base in Shek territory I get raided by Dust Bandits, Band of Bones, and Kral's Chosen. Not to mention a pile of dead bandits in front of my gates at all times...with my base off the coast of vain/dreg I've only been attacked by cannibals, their "swarm" was just insane in numbers but all really weak and almost completely destroyed by 8 turrets and a level 3 gate.

I've seen a gorillo or two every now and then zoom past the base, but unless you send people within feet of them they stay to themselves. Sometimes beak things come near my gate because of dying bandits or random creatures, but most attacks I get are faction raids (slavers will attack here, as well as fishmen and band of bones occasionally, and the fishmen arrive in massive numbers, though they die fairly easily.) worst raid I had was from the Holy Nation, Slavers, and Fishmen, which all attacked simultaneously. But overall attacks don't happen much so long as you keep the dead bodies burning, otherwise you'll have bonedogs or bonewolfs or spiders in large packs attack your gate often.

Personally I just like the feeling of having a remote outpost, kind of like an operating base, rather than having two cities right next to eachother. Mainly an aesthetic thing for me. But other cons include Major Faction raids, like Shek wanting tribute or Prayer Day for the HN. But even those aren't too bad. Worst thing for me was, dispite being literally right next to a city, when we would get raided (several times a day), even if the Shek Tribute parties were there, they'd just let us get steam rolled while they'd steal my food (when we were relatively weak. we steam roll now lol)
