Question about gates and visitors

If the gate+base+buildings are set to public, is it safe to close them and other NPCs can still wander in? I have a shop setup, and while I don't expect the most money out of it...was curious if the traders and wandering groups will still enter the base even if I close the gate.

They will indeed open the gates as long as they are unlocked, but so will bandits. Gates are best left locked and open, then closed as needed. Keep any building that has food/items you dont want stolen in it(besides a shop) private and locked, especially if not in use.
