Character Food Preferences
Hey all,

So, I have a self-sufficient town who's main food is the Dustwich made from Cactus (8) and Bread (1) - I'm producing this in excess currently.

However, while my production chain gives me a nice excess of Cactus and Bread, my characters are eating the bread directly, rather than the resulting Dustwich. As a result, my Dustwich production sometimes halts as they've eaten all the bread. So, now I have an excess of Cactus and Dustwich production is halted due to no bread. This seems silly.

For clarity, I do have both a Food Storage barrel and a Bread Basket - the latter designed to be the buffer for Dustwich production.

Is there any way to prioritise food choice? Ideally I'd like to be able to mark a container (the bread basket) to not be eaten from, but used just as a source ingredient.

I do have an almost full Food Barrel full of Dustwiches, so my Cook does grab a loaf of bread successfully quite often, however, my fairly carefully balanced production line is "broken" due to guys eating what they should not.

Any ideas, or is this something that needs to be address by the devs ideally?

Edit: I've also noticed that certain of my characters (scorchlanders) are eating my Raw Meat directly too. I'd been hoarding this as an ingredient for future food production, however, they've eaten through a full barrel of the stuff!

Mabye try moving the food barrel closer to where the characters come in? I'm not sure how pathing works when it comes to having characters "getting food". My characters also never seem to eat raw meat, even they are starving.

edit: would be nice to have an option to tell characters "DONT TOUCH THIS", similar to Rimworld.

Good suggestion. I had considered this myself. My Food Barrent is right next to the Cook Stove, but the Bread basket is technically the first thing they encounter when entering the building, well, after the raw meat barrel.

It seems a shame the default isn't for character to grab the best (most nutritious) food available to them.

I may move stuff around, just don't relish all that clicking lol.

From my experience, they grab the best thing out of the barrel they choose. So if you have 20nu food in a food barrel, and 50nu in there, they'll take the 50nu first. I imagine moving the barrels around would probably fix this.

Yeah, I think I'll have to do just that...shame they get the best from the first barrel they encounter, rather thant he much better stuff in the barrel next to it.

I've found my people will run past the food store to take bread so I set my cook to make dustwiches as primary and bread as secondary. That way he isn't standing around with nothing to do. One cook is feeding 20 people and building up a good surplus.
I have the same problem with my Hiver turret guards eating foul raw meat out of my animal trough because it's closer to them, rather than food cubes. Results in them running to grab food much more often because the foul meat gives such a low nutrition value.

I think having the ability to set container to "Eat from me" or not would be quite useful, though giving some thought when placing a food container seems to work around the issue to a degree.

Then produce more bread then your crew can stomach.

Would you want to eat something called a dustwich? :)
