If your gate is facing the wrong way then guess what?
You walls are probbaly facing the wrong way as well because gates default direction is the walls they are attached to, or the gate defaults in the direction the walls are facing.
Granted with default makeshift walls it makes no real difference, however when upgraded to walls II then they would be facing the wrong way. Your castle just became a holding pen :P
Surprisingly enough my walls are facing the correct direction, i placed the gate on top of the built walls and then i think i rotated it (think how you make gates on Age of Empires).
Anyway, i sorta solved the issue by just making a wall on facing inward and it seems to be working even though its not actually conected.
