Go to a shop in town, you almost always start near at least 1. Shops often sell maps of the surrounding area. These maps will add markers to your map

It makes me start in Bast every time, not a shop in sight and no bloody idea where anything is, spent a good hour or two running in random directions and dying haha

You go to Drin, and work a bit and save some food for the journey to Sho-battai. I only find iron near Drin. I know this is an old question but I had the same struggles for a bit.

Bast is a good spawn, rebel farmer bring their dog and they normally get own by UC and also HN patrol. Helping UC and HN take down rebel farmer will also help with training.

Bone dog have 1 or 2 meat I forgot. And animal hide you can sell. You will not starve in bast.

It's a good idea to use the Wanderer start at first, it's as close to an easy mode as this game gets. You start in Hub, which is mostly in ruins (you can buy all of those and fix them up for your own use without worrying about raids), and you're close to Stack in the north and Squin in the south, with relatively weak enemies.

Once you have a better grasp of the game and its world, the other starts provide more of a challenge :)

I think in vanilla your map doesn't even have roads marked right? I would recommend downloading a popular map mod that marks roads and zones so with roads you have some idea of where towns could be. Not all towns are on roads but most are so its a good idea even without this mod to follow a road once you have found one till you find a town.

If you are new to the game and don't know who the locals are you need to be bit stealthy when you find a town and try to sus out who the owners are before you get spotted. This might mean waiting somewhere nearby till dark so you can get up closer and see without being spotted.

Thread is from 2018. Still, Kenshi definitely feels like a game in which you really should just use the default start in your first game. Another thread recently, as well, about somebody being utterly lost by one of the alternative game starts. Just not worth it until you have a handle on the game and possess a basic mental map of the gameworld.
