I actually find Hivers are better with maximum attack speed and a fast weapon (You've already chosen polearm, so that's good)
Assassin's Rags, Blackened Hiver chain shirt and Blacked Chain Tangemust is how I equip my hivers using polearms. They attack so fast, they rarely get hit. Excellent for clearing crowds of fodder to get to the big juicy targets.
If you're using polearms, go with Steady Arms, not KLR. Steady have higher DEX. It'll let you use the superior DpS (But weaker AOE control) Heavy Polearm more effectively
Also- why not samurai helmet?
Perhaps because of the Dodge penalty? Maybe also the Perception penalty because many players give Hiver characters crossbows so they can then earn Precision Exp because they're planning on using them as Turret Gunners? (That's what I generally do with Hivers.)
IMO, the Bestest Armor you have at the moment that also provides the most extensive Coverage is always the best choice for Hivers. For "Melee Hivers" you may as well plan on Robotics at some point. You might stretch their survival/Defense by giving them a Sabre, though a Polearm is a great overall weapon choice.
I prefer the Masked Helmet, but Harpoon Resistance does matter if one is going up against a lot of crossbows and/ore turrets. Hiver heads also have a high chance of being hit.

Note: Leg Coverage is very important for Hiver Melee characters. It may be worth considering Unholy Plate for a Hiver melee character due to the fact that you can't heavily protect their legs with Plated Boots.

Even so... A Dustcoat basically gives them at least some protection "everywhere." There's not much else that is better that will also give you the chance to provide them with arm and leg protection.
IOW - Hivers are hard to protect effectively and will likely end up with Robotic limbs at some point because of that. One late-mid to end-game hit from an enemy can slice off a limb pretty darn easily.
