Gameskinny's guide[www.gameskinny.com].
In any case, I found some other tips for beginners and I got some free recruits(I forgot there were free ones) and I joined Shinobi guild which sold me very cheap backpacks and some armor, so it seems like a very good start right now.
Obviously I hired Beep, or rather I accepted his invitation to join his group to become the best samurai.
Put a housing unit down a good distance away from your mining operation. Bandits will approach that building and 'attack' it - which means they'll run inside and stand there if no one is nearby. That's it. They'll stand in there until the attack is over and then leave, leaving your mining/farming operation alone.
There isn't much that *needs* to be inside a building until you're ready to start crafting. Stick a tech bench inside and keep an eye out for bandits - pull your researcher out when they come near.
You'll be able to mine and farm - including making food like Grog/Rum (high cost items for trade) and make money unmolested.
I found a better way to start off, soon I will be strong enough to make a base.
Training at Shinobi Thieves is already big, it gives me +10 to melee attack so I should be able to handle starving bandits etc.
