The Best Weapon!
What is the biggest threat in this game? Attacks you cant defend from. Attacks that happen when you are in the middle of an attack animation or a stun.

When such attacks happen? When you are mobbed by a group of npcs.

How do you avoid such attacks? Spending the least amount of time possible in such animations. Either by killing the mob fast or by using a fast weapon.

The falling sun deals the biggest damage in the game, but it is slow. For each hit you deal you on a group of enemies you may take several hits often (skin bandits!).

The katana and wakizashi are fast weapons, but they dont hit many npcs at once...

The nodachi, naginata and polearms instead hit many npcs at once, and attack faster than heavy weapons.

Reach + sppeed = best defense.

When you wield a nodachi against a group of enemies, you may take a hit may be stunlock in 2 hits, but you will often hit 3 or even more times consecutively. Each time you may hit maybe 4 or 5 npcs. The falling sun would probably hit only one time.

Each npc hit is less likely to attack you when you are stuck in an attacking frame!

The naginata is slower but! It doesnt waste frames in dangerous double katana attacks.

The other polearms? No idea.

Thus it is my conclusion that for a solo character wearing heavy armor, the best option is dex skeleton arms, samurai armor (doesnt hurt dex) and either a nodachi or naginata.

I say this considering a scenario where you are surrounded by 10 or more npcs.

A falling sun or a plank would be fine against 2, maybe 5. But groups of 5 npcs arent rly the worse this game has to offer :P

What do you guys think?

I think you need to work on your micro. The best defense is dodging attacks by disengaging combat.

Make sure you get the first strike when you engage again. It's easier with longer weapons.

Thats an option but it feels like exploiting the mechanics. I never micro.

Then I would go for polearm or long cleaver. And in the very late game when you have great stats and robotics the falling sun.

All of these weapon have great reach and good damage potencial.

And always try to get to the maximal attack and defense speed bonus when chosing armour in the lategame. It matters a lot.

Best solo build is heavy crossbow with fast legs

eagle cross isn't great unless your only worried about shooting an enemy at maximum range, the ammo is the most expensive crossbow ammo and it carries the lowest number of shots per quiver, so the damage is good, but when the ammo is 39 cats per shot it... also the reload time is garbage, have fun kiting about enemies forever 'cause you take forever to shoot.
a toothpick can stunlock enemies to death with ease, and a MkII is a great workhorse bow that loads regulars, much cheaper then longs and they weigh less AND they carry three times the ammo per quiver.

Toothpick does around 2 to 6 damage to heavy samurai, you don't want that as your main solo weapon.

yeah, it works much better for support then solo, oldworld mk2 though, that's a reliable bow with one of the better ammo types.
edit: spring bat works too, has damage comparable to an eagle, but it's ammo packs twice the shots and the poor range isn't much of a concern for solo play. heck it's barely relevant for normal play.

For solo play, i tend to use wpn with high def modification (sabres, jitte)

For my gank squad, i use wpn with high atk modification (polearm, guardless katana)

I agree that naginata and polearm are some of the best wpns in the game

Yes they are. Great reach, low penalty, and pretty fast too.

It's even better when you use higher population modifier option

What is the biggest threat in this game you ask. For my people which are all human faction It is without doubt the Skin Bandits of the South part of the map. Ugliest cruelest tactics of kidnapping any foe that they knock out and running away to their base with them to put them in a skin peeling machine. This most always ends in death of that character and most of the squad members are too injured to chase and kill the robot skin harvester. It is possible to rescue them but very difficult. If you are human and want the challenge they are waiting near the volcanoes in the south. The weapon you chose should be one that gives bonuses against robots and I used masterworks crossbows as well.

But you dont spend most of your time on that part of the map. Most of the time, you hunt animals and do trade runs from town to town. You dont really encounter hostile robots on most part of the world.

Even if you wanna raid ruins, the best approach is by kiting and stealthing. Kite all of the robospider to the outside of the building, and then run all the way back in.

In a condition where you could outnumber enemies heavily, crossbows beat any other wpns

Your problem happened because you were trying to equip heavy weapon to character that cant wield it. To properly using a falling sun, you need to have minimum of 40 dex and twice the strength of the weapon weight. Strong characters can wield a falling sun as fast as they wield a katana. Penalty on heavy weapons are only significant at early game.

Nodachi, katana, polearm and cut oriented weapons will become less relevant as you fight progressively heavier armored enemies, and there is a speed cap of how fast you can wield them. Dont be surprised when your 60 dex champion with his meitou nodachi only doing 20ish damage against 100+ 50 stat bandits with standard grade heavy armor. Those weapons are only good for a short term and you should definitely move on to heavier weapon over time, but with proper training before hand. Sometime it is a good idea to sacrifice combat efficiency temporarily in order for your character to accustomed to more powerful weapon of choice.

Polearm and heavy polearm have 30% armor penetration and they also have amazing reach.

Ppl talk abt endgame, but endgame is mostly abt outnumbering your enemies. Weapon types become less relevant, as crossbow squad will always outdps any other wpns.
